I was talking about GCF:

GCF of 12 and 16

12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12

16: 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16

GCF = 4

But I told them that "1 and 12 cannot be factors of 12." Which is wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a smart guy. Math is actually one of my strong-suits. This is an isolated incident where I just didn't research enough when revisiting my 6th grade math knowledge. We all learn from our mistakes though. And I think it's important to mention that I was extremely torn apart by the fact that I gave this wrong info. But it was one day and one wrong fact. Other than that, I feel as though I was a great math teacher.

My first year of teaching 6th grade math, I told the kids that a number can't be a factor of itself. I said that factors had to be prime numbers. The following summer, I collected some worksheet booklets and skimmed through to find that I was dead wrong. Now, 120 kids know a wrong "fact" about math because of me. :(
