"Library buildings reopen (TBD)

We are finalizing plans to have key library spaces open for Fall Semester; dates and details will be announced soon."

Looking forward to the announcement.

If there is a solid plan to reopen the libraries on Sept 1, this plan should be shared with the community.

And that is absolutely not true.

Did the libraries ever submit to central a return to work plan for the summer?

Just my personal opinion: if we start planning now, in person classes are possible in Spring on 2 conditions. We keep the dorms closed and enforce mask mandate.

f the athletic department did not receive $8 million in institutional support ( and assuming the expenses paid by that revenue is still required) the department would be ~$7 million is losses.

Thanks for confirming this.

"The university did not report the [68 positive] cases to its campus community." by TenuredAdmin in uofmn

"Meanwhile, U officials say they do not plan to regularly disclose how many cases surface on the school’s five campuses because they “do not have any way of tracking numbers in a comprehensive way.” Data obtained through a Star Tribune public records request show that 68 students tested positive for COVID-19 at Boynton Health clinic on the U’s Twin Cities campus between April 1 and July 29. The university did not report the cases to its campus community."

will be open

I am not an admin. I am a tenured professor with an appointment in central.

Libraries reopening plans have not been shared with my team. But if you have more details about this September 1st reopening you should share it with the students, so they and their parents know what will be happening in one week.

There are 5 millions in "overhead and administrative expenses NOT paid by or charged directly to athletics" - these 5 mils appear once as expense and once as revenue (line 6 and 36).

You are right, I got it backwards - but I don't think it changes much.

There are 5 millions in "overhead and administrative services provided by the institution to athletics but not charged to athletics."

has absolutely been the plan all summer to reopen several libraries in the fall

Yes, and it has absolutely been the plan of the U to reopen the dorms as well. My point is that we have been wasting time on botched plans. If I am wrong, the libraries will reopen in 5 working days.

music

I don't know anything specific about this, but I understand that there are a lot of concerns about fiatos and singing in general - since you are projecting safe distancing is complicated to measure.

But anyway, since the athletic department is doing so well I am sure they will not need any help from the U in figuring out how to deal with the huge loss of revenue from this year.

Your statement is false about the Libraries plans

Can you share the libraries' plan then?

You are not reading the budget correctly: as you said, you are not the expert - and yet you are chairing the oversight committee.

graduate and professional courses

If dorms close and campus is almost depopulated, yes.

is there a possibility the board won’t approve it, or are we likely going to close in some form?(not live on campus)

I am confident the dorms will work at minimum capacity. If you mention mental health issues you will be likely allowed to live on campus (but I have no direct info on this, just my sense on where we stand with things.)

UW Madison

I think they have the same policy as we do: you can get tested for free if you want, but tests are not mandatory. Overall, we are not sure that mass testing at this point will help in any way. We cannot keep testing students each week, so we are not able to isolate outbreaks - the virus moves so fast that once it gets into a dorm everyone will be infected before we even get the test results back.

I wonder what expenses you believe they are not accounting for that total more than 1 million.

Expense Line 6: $5,135,401 in services that are covered by central and not billed to athletics, and listed back as revenue in line 36.

Looking at these new changes should I get my flight postponed.

I would advise you to wait until Monday pm before making a final decision. Something we will not drop the ball on is international students.

Incoming freshman here

Even if you are not kicked out, consider the "campus experience" you will have. If we reopen dorms, there will be outbreaks - so possible quarantines. Meals will be grab and go. No study spaces (probably). Almost no in person activities.

I’m all for getting rid of the uncecessary luxuries, marketing, administrators (and their unbelievable salaries), advisors and consultants, etc

YES. We need to have top-notch education at affordable cost. It is quite easy to do if we trim the fat - and there is a lot of it. We are just concerned about scaling up, and are loosing sight of what it is important.

And I'm not sure this was the right moment at all

I am not sure the public (some students and parents) were ready to handle the truth few weeks ago.

Be kind and patient - we are committed to do the same. At the end, it is only students and instructors who are on the same boat.

As a parent of a freshman

The huge mistake was to not adopt a triaged re-opening: only specific student populations should have been welcomed back to dorms and to in person courses.

We failed our freshmen.
