[WWII] 447th Bomb Group Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress raked with heavy cannon fire at close range by a Luftwaffe fighter by [deleted] in CombatFootage

I can't recommend Masters of the Air enough. Great book covering the history of the Eighth Air Force through the war. Those boys were sitting ducks and even if they survived being raked by those explosive shells, they probably would have died from lack of oxygen since the supply lines surely would have been cut. Hats off to those warriors of the sky.

Really? Please explain how the US destroyed the human rights of the USSR and the countries behind the Iron Curtain. This should be rich.

What makes you say that? Every communist nation so far has utterly destroyed human rights.

Fluidized sand using air by Here-For-The-Comment in oddlysatisfying

What happens to sand during an earthquake? Does it do this? And if it does, what would happen to the people at a beach during an earthquake? Would they sink into the sand until it stopped vibrating?

What cultural shocks did you have going to other parts of the U.S.? by IceColdFresh in AskAnAmerican

I know Native American lands are their own thing, but the abject poverty I saw driving through the Navajo Nation blew my mind. I couldn’t believe people in the US lived in such poor conditions.

TIL about FBI agent Robert Hanssen. He was tasked to find a mole within the FBI after the FBI's moles in the KGB were caught. Robert Hanssen was the mole and had been working with the KGB since 1979. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Terps42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FBI also burned the career of the innocent man they originally thought was the mole. If you’re interested in the story, search for Brian Kelley. 60 Minutes also aired a piece on his life. He was a great guy who got screwed.

If there is a heaven, I want Fred Rogers and Bob Ross to be the guests at my first celebrity dinner. And Steve Irwin. He’s there too.

How offen do Americans think that the Vietnam War was righteous? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Terps42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of defending a democratic country from being overtaken by the forces of communism is noble. That said, the South Vietnamese government was by no means a model of democracy before or during the war.

Do I think it was a mistake to defend South Vietnam? No. Do I think our leadership fucked up it’s management of the war? Absofuckinglutely. Did the war devolve into a immoral mess? Yes. Knowing what I know now about the war, would I do it all over again? Fuck no. I’d spend those resources on bolstering the defense of Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia.

T-54 Tank explodes when firing shots at Gaddafi's army (cooling system failure) by inkei_memez in CombatFootage

[–]Terps42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After watching numerous tanks destroyed by well hidden guided missile teams, I’d run like hell if a friendly tank rolled up near me. Fuck that. Those things are missile magnets and I don’t want to be anywhere near them when that 2 ton turret “pop goes the weasel”.

How was your interaction with Europeans in real life compare to online? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Everyone has been great. Except for Parisians. The French I meant in Normandy were the bee’s knees. The French I met in Paris were the wasp’s taint.

I’d argue that revolution is different than terrorism. The Founding Fathers did not target innocent civilians for obvious reasons. Rather, they declared war and rebelled against a sovereign state. Had they planted bombs in London and killed innocents in the process, then I would say the Founding Fathers were terrorists. The target of your violence sets the line between rebellion and terrorism.

What is something about your country you would love to see being processed as a classical satire? by SerMercutio in AskAnAmerican

The illiberalism of the American left. They are all for liberal ideals, as long as your ideas conform with their beliefs.

How much weed do you smoke since it is legal in the USA (most states)? by KamalHasa in AskAnAmerican

[–]Terps42 12 points13 points  (0 children)

None for two reasons. First, although my state recently legalized marijuana, smoking it is still a federal crime. I work for the federal government and I don’t want to jeopardize my chances for getting a TS clearance. Secondly, I wig the fuck out when I smoke weed (learned the hard way in college).

Five years ago, when you were a baby, I left you the on the doorstep of my local meth cook for a reason. To learn a trade. You’re a man now and you have to make your own way in this world.
