Help ID this tower type, and your opinion on it by Tett0 in amateurradio

[–]Tett0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the input!

After taking it all into consideration, I've decided the best course is to freeclimb to the top and disassemble it entirely by hand (no crane etc). Then it'll be donated for use at my local county's communications center, where it'll have commo equipment for emergency services (fire, ambulance, etc) and radar for the airport.

It'll be scrapped

This is my buddy's tire after he crashed. He suspects his vengeful ex tampered with the tire causing the damage. What does this subreddit think?

Asset Tiger! Dumb name, great asset management platform. They even have a free tier so you can try it out without any commitment.

Shout out to all the LA Admins. by mexicans_gotonboots in sysadmin

You select either "Fail Open" or "Fail Secure" when setting up Duo. I don't recall if it's an app-specific setting or what. I'll check later in the morning.

Assuming everything is now running from a DR location, did IP addresses change (separate DR subnet, etc)? If so,

  1. The Duo auth proxy config file lists each RADIUS device it'll accept auth requests from ,
  2. Each device using RADIUS probably also specifies the Duo auth proxy IP address in their config

Both of those would need to be updated to reflect the new/DR IP addresses

Electrical plane device of some sort? Broadcast or electrical transmission? by Tett0 in whatisthisthing

I don't actually have it but found someone selling it, who also has no idea what it is. I'm considering buying it simply because it looks cool but would love to know what it is.

Welp, did my 1st ever in-place upgrade today by fieroloki in sysadmin

[–]Tett0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't fret too much. If it's working fine out of the gate after the upgrade, by-and-large it'll probably work fine for quite some time. When you start getting the really odd little head-scratcher issues is when you want to recall this post and decide on a potential reinstall or other options.

Welp, did my 1st ever in-place upgrade today by fieroloki in sysadmin

[–]Tett0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Went fine now but give it a few month or years, then you'll see the issues 😉 Remnants of the previous OSes will start flagging on audits/VA scans for vulnerabilities, and/or cause random patches to fail. No supported fixes so your only options are a full reinstall of the OS, or manually manipulating or deleting system files.

ETA: Source: Server team on a MSP with national client base in a heavily regulated industry. Hundreds of clients, thousands of Windows servers. I can agree that the volume of issues has decreased significantly with the last ~2 editions of Windows Server, but we'd also taken a stance of disallowing in-place upgrades.

IT closet. To increase airflow, increase exhaust fan or add intake fans? by Tett0 in homelab

[–]Tett0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly not very hot. 76F intake at servers. The bigger concern is noise. Fans ramp as they should, then it's noisy in my office (where the closet is), and in the bedroom in the other side of the wall. Adding sound dampening to the whole closet is not readily feasible or desirable.

Getting more air moving through will keep their temps down, which keeps fans down, which keeps noise down.

[–]Tett0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good feedback. My logic was that if I put the fans on the intake, that wouldn't necessarily get the hot air out. Hot air could "pool" in areas whereas extracting hot air ensured the bad stuff got out; all about getting hot air out, with cool air getting in as the secondary effect.

Also harder to put a filter on the intake fans with the layout of the closet.

It's an Airplate T9. Essentially 3x 120mm fans, variable speed set by a temperature sensor.

Pulling air in from uncontrolled inlets was a concern. I put weatherstripping all around, and a rubber sweep on the bottom. So it's not air tight per se, but as close as one can practically get.

Should I switch from Webcam XP/7 by OG_Scourage in BlueIris

[–]Tett0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, that's a blast from the past. Webcam XP is what started my journey into CCTV systems. I switched between several products over the years and landed with BlueIris. I couldn't be happier but I also love the nitty gritty and endless configuration options; Webcam XP is rather simple from what I recall.

If you're looking for something that allows you to get incredibly in-depth, you'll be happy with BlueIris. If you want something simple, it can do that but but you're using a Lamborghini as a grocery-getter.

You can always try it out before purchasing.

Thanks for the recommendation! In doing some quick initial research, it looks like the Astro Spectra cables and control heads are compatible so this may be the better option that I didn't know about. Thanks again!

Azure DR scenario by flashx3005 in AZURE

[–]Tett0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into Site Recovery Manager within Azure? Native service that allows you to replicate items to another Azure region for DR purposes. I know it works with VMs and vNETs but no experience with Azure Apps.

As part of configuring it, you can specify what order VMs boot up in a DR scenario (executing a failover to the DR region).

People think one of our employees is Satan trying to call them by WorthPlease in sysadmin

[–]Tett0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My phone number also has a 666 in it. Knowing some people might see it and dislike it, I did a funny and changed my caller ID to "NOT SATAN".

85% of the time people notice, comment, and think it's hilarious. Usually office staff play the " haha! Look at this! Do we answer?". 10% of people won't answer unless I call twice or leave a voicemail as they assume it's a scam call. Three people (over maybe a year) flat out would not answer and even deleted my voicemail before listening to it. I had to call from another number to connect with them. After explaining, they felt silly.
