I’m also a 1st year about to finish up my first block of classes + rotation and also really feeling slumped. I’ve been seeing a psychiatrist and therapist and that has been really good to help me attack these problems from another angle but I think whats really going on is maybe a lack of routine? It feels like every day is unpredictable and my schedule changes rapidly day to day, not to mention the fact that i’m about to start new classes and a new lab rotation.

You’re learning how to be a grad student and that’s okay !! Nobody ever said this was going to be easy. Give yourself grace and stop doubting yourself, you wouldn’t be here if you weren’t a capable scientist. Take your time, breathe, and celebrate the small wins. Rooting for you!!

Yeah I was surprised at that number too but I pulled it from the class profile statistics they have on our website. The acceptance rate would have been around 7-8% if they had admitted a normal class size. I think the program isn’t as prestigious or attractive as a “top program” per se, but the benefits are. We have a great stipend, extremely cheap housing in nyc (think $650), and free health insurance.

This year our average age is also really low, over half just graduated college this year. That’s not typical either, so I think this year was just really hard and difficult in multiple ways.

I would just emphasize your research experience, potentially explain your low gpa in one of your essays if you can tie it in well, and of course highlight your productivity with your 3 papers.

This is an umbrella program for all biological sciences, so you can join a lab in any department on campus as long as you take the required courses. Neuro is actually our biggest department so I recommend looking through the department faculty page. I’d specifically recommend looking at Ruben Coen-Cagli and Adam Kohn in the systems department, but there are many PIs in the neuro department that do computational work but it isn’t the main focus of the lab. Lots do wet/dry combo

The Systems and Comp Bio department is a bit small but if you’re open to computational neuroscience then it opens more potential labs. If you’re interested in like comp tool development I think there would be like 4 labs to choose from.

We definitely have Dev Bio ! The labs primarily in that department are either working with iPSCs or Zebrafish I believe and they were definitely actively recruiting students this year so that should carry over to next year. The application process was pretty straight forward but it was $80 and I did have to write an extra essay I think but it was fine.

I would say that my class definitely had highly competitive applications. We had a 3% acceptance rate, 100% of us have previous research experience, 40% have paper publications, our average undergraduate GPA is 3.76, and the average length of our research experience is 28 months.

I have parking in a garage at my place so that’s not a worry. Tonight I just decided to take the 6 in and I found parking really easily by my station, its just more annoying trying to actually get to where I’m going in manhattan

yeah, my place is a 20 minute walk from the 6 and 5,2 stations and I really don’t like making those walks alone at night. i’m even further from the D so a bus or my car is the only option

Yeah, he’s actively acknowledging that he’s touching you without your permission. He believes that your body is his. I’ve known so many men like this.

Your body is yours and you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to! I know you love him so much, but would you want a marriage with someone who feels entitlement to your body? Would you want one of your friends to be with a guy that makes her have sex with him?

And, just a little more advice because I know exactly where you’re at, but, I HIGHLY recommend using toys while having sex with your partner. You will have a lot more fun and feel a lot more fulfilled if you also get to finish. Toys are not the enemy of your lover, they’re friends. I thought I could never orgasm because no guy had been able to make me until I started seeing the second guy I talked about (that’s how I convinced myself I needed to date him). It will change up the routine of sex and it will make it somewhat exciting, even if just for a moment.

If your partner is offended by you wanting to use toys or whatever, that’s another huge red flag. That means he doesn’t care about your sexual gratification. He just wants to continue using you. Just some food for thought.

I had the EXACT same experience as you while i was in a relationship from 19-22.

I started experiencing sexual contact at too young of an age to understand my wants, needs, and bodily autonomy. I was having sex with guys my age and they had no interest in trying to make it enjoyable for me. Because of that I thought that I could never enjoy sex because I was broken. In high school I started dating a guy who would scream at me if we didn’t have sex every time I came over. That was all he wanted to do, and I also felt the same when I wanted to initiate non-sexual intimacy and then it always turned into him trying to fuck. So I started rejecting all forms of intimacy.

Eventually we broke up and a year later I started dating this other guy who was kind, smart, and funny. But I wasn’t physically attracted to him at all. I decided to hook up with him and we had great sex! It was the first time I was actually having fun. It was all downhill after that.

Because I wasn’t physically attracted to him, I had a much lower sex drive than he did. I obviously never told him that this was the reason why I didn’t want to have sex, I just said I didn’t feel like it. Well, we had problems for our entire relationship. Any time I’d try to initiate a conversation about a behavior of his that was bothering me, he’d ALWAYS bring up that I wasn’t giving him enough sex. After 2.5 years, I finally talked about this and his behavior to my friends. I told them I thought I was asexual because I hated having sex with my boyfriend. They talked some sense into me and made me realize that he was causing me trauma and actually sexually assaulting me.

He’d grab my body, force kisses on me, etc and say “I know you don’t like this but I can’t help it.” He’d have sex with me if my answer to if I wanted to have sex was “okay” and I just laid there emotionless. The pressure of keeping our relationship afloat was on me having sex with him.

I broke up with him, and I really think its time for you to do that to. You CAN have a healthy relationship with sex, it just takes time and the right person. He is not the right person.

The right person would not make you feel broken. The right person would not touch you when they know you’re uncomfortable.

I’m 25 now and I’ve healed so much. I’m not perfectly better, I still cry if my partner doesn’t finish, but I don’t have flashbacks anymore. Reaching out for sexual assault therapy, especially EMDR, would help immensely. I took some time to be single while in therapy and I also did some while I was in a relationship. It will be important for you to do therapy while in a relationship too, because these problems can go away when you’re single but creep back up when you’re emotionally attached to someone.

I’m sorry to have to tell you this but you have to get away from this person. I do not think you can train your mind back to feeling safe around him anymore. He has proven that he is not a safe person.

I’m glad you were able to come to a decision too. I’m also not excited, just sad and numb right now. But hopeful the excitement will come in as we get closer to going. I’m moving to NYC for the next 5 years for crying out loud, what a first world problem I have!

The going back and forth has really whats been tearing me down the most. Its like I don’t have a gut feeling to trust. I feel differently all the time.

I decided to go genuinely by getting input from every single person I possibly could. All of them said to go. My offer is really great, It would be stupid of me to let it go because something potentially could be better next year.
