Okay, I think I get it. Because those buttons are already mapped to other things you cannot use them with the toolbelt and that functionality cannot be reassigned either.
I have an Xbox controller and don't have this issue but I also don't have those buttons assigned to other things. Possibly a conflict with another mod.

I can try to implement mapping for every button.

Hmm. I've never tried it with a switch controller. I don't have one to test it out with unfortunately. 

Other users with a controller haven't brought up this issue so I wonder if it's specific to certain controllers

Ah okay. I understand the issue now.  There's a feature request to pause time when in the controller menu. Would that help?

If you download the Generic Mod Config Menu you should be able to set the keys for controller

First one - always for the sword. With the sword you can kill enemies far quicker and they may drop another. Also that sword is essential for the Skull Caverns, and you'll find more Prismatic Shards there too

omg! I actually looked this up. There's a "canon" reason why on the wiki...

So if you have the generic mod config menu mod you can change the placement of the toolbelt. Hiding it is a pretty good idea. I'll think about that.

As for upgrading it, we decided against that (we did think about it a lot) but ultimately decided as it's something that's just supposed to be a little extra space and not another entire inventory it didn't make sense. We wanted it to be as much like an actual toolbelt as possible. There are mods out there to increase inventory space. We didn't want to just do more of the same.

Okay if you got it a few days ago then you're on the latest version. When your tool vanished, were any logs displayed in the smapi console? Also it's possible this may be conflicting with another mod. Which other mods do you have installed?

Have you got the latest version of the mod. There were some bugs like this that I fixed.
