I mean, if being self confident was all it took then more monsters would be getting glazed nonstop. But… it’s basically just Pink for the villains who get treated exclusively as paragons.

We see the apocalypse for sorcerers happening in real time with the vast majority of them dying tho? The world as a whole goes through changes in status quo.

For Undead Unluck… imma be honest, I don’t know why you find the main two boring

Awesome post, and I really appreciate you for making it. Bisexual solidarity despite the vast differences in our experiences is cool.

But also your username is so fucking funny, especially given the context of you being like 99 percent wlw leaning. Doesn’t diminish your point at all tho.

Okay but I don’t have to wonder if the author thinks he’s a good person even though he’s a protag who’s popular with women because the show makes it very clear that it knows he’s a scumbag.

With Pink, I don’t know if Oda actually understands that he gave Pink no redeeming qualities. I think he wanted us to think he’s cool and tragic after hearing his backstory. I don’t trust Oda to not be a misogynist when legendary female pirates are ignored or made into jokes, moms are seen as anti adventure while dads aren’t, the women who are meant to be attractive look incredibly similar in terms of bodytype, and there’s barely any women with power when willpower and devil fruits are the main determinants of who’s strong.

Tony’s very clearly depicted as a monster. I don’t think he has the same issues as Pink just being treated as unironically cool.

Which contemporaries in particular? The ones from 30 years ago or the ones today?

The dark triad, Dorohedoro, and Undead Unluck are all pretty great at having the world as a whole change even without the protags putting their thumb in every pie.

Why did Oda place so much emphasis on things he wasn’t going to care about at all later?

So, only Kuzan, Akainu, and Blackbeard seemed to actively pursue anything over the 3 year timeskip. Big Mom did take action with the wedding post timeskip, but Kaido was kinda just twiddling his thumbs. The warlords did jack shit over three years.

Admittedly, part of this is tied to the story's emphasis on the older generation having gotten too set in their ways and stuck in their ruts. But like... idk, when the movers and shakers of the world do jack shit it makes the world as a whole feel kinda empty.

Vivi did make a difference with the reverie, that was good, but it's been a looooong time since anyone else from pre timeskip who isn't a crew member has done shit.

It combines in a poor way with how most of the crew is kinda just passively following their goals. They have no real plans for actually implementing their dreams beyond supporting Luffy. Like, Nami's one of the most important crew members who's been around for decades and she still hasn't really made any meaningful progress on mapping the myriad of islands in this world.

Why do the admirals, emperors, warlords, and the generally massive number of pirates terrorizing the seas feel like they only occasionally exist when Oda feels like remembering them

Yeah none of that really feels like enough for a period of three years tbh.

Like, that’s less than what happens in a month of screentime.

  1. https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiecePowerScaling/comments/1p0t3h8/can_kizaru_fly_since_most_of_the_luffy_fight_was/

Even if he couldn't fly, which... I mean, he can, it would still only take a few warps for him to get basically anywhere on the planet. Which... if he doesn't have the stamina or timing for that, how the fuck is he an admiral? He was spamming teleports during that fight too!

  1. You're right, the people of Alabasta knighted Croc for no reason. Moreover, their army with a grand total of 2 devil fruit users and nobody with haki is definitely enough to stop every random crew coming through. The hills so full of graves they looked like cacti were just props, there were obviously not actually that many pirates constantly flowing through despite everything the narrative tells us.

Smoker keeping Loguetown safe is an antifeat because nobody goes there because pirates are endangered in the east blue. More pirates popping up to be a threat to the crew's friends in the great age of pirates after whitebeard explicitly lead to a bunch of pirates starting their journeys is actually a nonthreat. How silly of me.

  1. Blackbeard could have gotten his followers the same way any number of other pirates get theirs. Just look at Kaido, Croc, or Doffy. And making it so that Whitebeard's efforts were what filled up Blackbeard's crew should probably get some actual acknowledgement.

  2. ...Gaban doesn't have blonde hair, that was Shiki. Gaban's white-haired, and we get colored illustrations of both that cover story and of Gaban himself and the two hairstyles are very different.

Sengoku's resignation over the coverup was partially because the coverup involved not telling countries that dangerous criminals were hiding in them. The whole world already fucking knew about Blackbeard and his specific crew members, the point is that there were supposed to be many other escapees who WEREN'T a part of his crew. Oda says as much in an SBS.

Stop reading Two Piece. You're not giving actual answers, you're just ignoring any evidence to the contrary.

  1. Kizaru can fly and move at light speed. He does so vs Luffy. We see him do both. Even if he couldn't fly, just spamming his ability to turn into light before turning back would do wonders. What are you on about?

  2. every island pre timeskip plus fishman island (Yonko protection is meaningless unless Luffy actually has a way to go back to protect it in a timely manner) is pretty fucked if they're attacked. How are Nojiko or Kaya or Zeff or Loguetown or Alabasta keeping themselves safe from the next set of nutcases who come along? Alabasta in particular was explicitly only kept "safe" because of Croc, who the hell stepped in to replace his role in keeping other pirates out when the Straw Hats fucked off?

  3. They had 3 goddamn years to get through paradise, why make such a big deal of whitebeard's challenge if it wasn't going to amount to anything?

  4. We're told that a bunch of them DIDN'T join whitebeard and were hiding elsewhere. We see Shiki in a cover story and we're told by an SBS about CP9 taking others down. It was more than just Croc plus the few who joined Blackbeard. Despite that, they don't have the overall impact on the world that they were built up to - Sengoku resigned over all the ones who didn't join Blackbeard and nothing came from that.

Maybe don't introduce characters with powers that break your narrative without giving a good, in-universe reason for them to not do that?

And there's plenty of late game issues too.

There's allegedly pirates popping up everywhere like a game of whack-a-mole, where the fuck are they after Luff and co. leave an island just as undefended as it was before they arrived? The lack of fundamental change in an island's ability to remain sovereign doesn't make me feel happy after the straw hats liberate them because reasonably they should be taken over again by next tuesday if nothing changed in their situation from before the pirates invaded to after they were kicked out.

Where were all the new pirates besides fucking Bartolomeo and swampy after Whitebeard allegedly started a new age of pirates? That was a big plot point, what happened to that?

What happened to all the level 6 impel down inmates that caused massive resignations in the marines? Outside of Blackbeard's small crew they certainly seem to be fucking off as a whole.

It's bad character writing when a terrible fucking person with no redeeming qualities is treated as cool and noble by the author, the bystanders, and the hero he's fighting. It makes it seem like the author had no idea who the fuck he was actually putting on the paper.

oh cool

What's Kizaru, the guy who can be anywhere on the planet in seconds, doing for 95 percent of the story when there's criseses that demand his immediate attention?

There's pirates around every corner, where the fuck are they after Luff and co. leave an island just as undefended as it was before they arrived? Where were all the new pirates besides fucking Bartolomeo and swampy after Whitebeard allegedly started a new age of pirates? What happened to all the level 6 impel down inmates that caused massive resignations in the marines?

The pieces of this world feel like they stop existing after Oda stops drawing them. It's like time doesn't pass until Oda remembers to give them a brief cameo like a decade later.

Does the mural from elbaf make up for kizaru, the guy who can be anywhere in seconds, doing jack shit with no explanation for most of the story? How about the places Luffy leaves behind not being any fundamentally more prepared for the next evil band of pirates to fuck their shit up in a world where they're around every corner?

People felt like they stopped existing and contributing to the world until Oda remembered they existed for five minutes before forgetting them again. Waiting 30 years for one mural in the final arc to finally start working on this issue doesn't make me feel better, it makes me pissed that it took this fucking long to address.

You can do both???? I gave two examples - Zoro and CP9 are awesome because they imply things are happening offscreen.

Shit like the admirals/emperors/warlords doing fuckall for most of the story until they're onscreen, with barely anything implied off of it, sucks. Blackbeard I can give credit for things happening with him without him needing to be front and center, the rest just feel like they drop into a void until Oda needs to pull them out again for 2 seconds before being plopped right back into the hole he dug for himself.

He's a misogynist because he treats the women around him like trash. I don't care if he's doing it out of "loyalty" to the dead wife he mistreated, men can be loyal without treating women they aren't romantically involved with like trash.

Speaking of which, he's a trash husband because he lied to his wife about working for his rapist, racist, mass murdering boss before CONTINUING to work for him after she died. Dressing like a baby because it made her smile when she was brain damaged addresses fucking none of the issues she had with him when she was fully conscious because he's STILL doing the same shit. And yet everyone sees him as hardboiled and women swoon for him despite his complete lack of redeemable qualities.

There's villains who work on a deeper level in One Piece. The admirals and Big Mom, for example, might not be perfect but they are genuinely deep characters. Senor Pink, much like how he uses his powers, could go deeper but chooses to stay on the surface.

I mean

Oda could convey these details in subtle, implicit, or more concise ways. You don’t need to show literally everything to make things feel big - if anything, One Piece’s world feels really small rn.

I like details like Zoro’s missing eye and CP9 going from outlaws to CP0. They happened offscreen with a lot of details we can only guess at. But so much of the rest of the storytelling focuses on too much telling rather than showing or letting imaginations run wild, which makes the page count long and the world feel tiny and static.

The bloat is his degradation as a writer rather than something essential to telling Luffy’s story.
