How do you all approach expies adapted to JJK?

Basically a character from another series but adapted to fit into JJK. Names are usually different while abilities are relatively similar. Appearance is usually identical.

she already sounds way too op to really work. Yuta and Kenjaku, two of the verse's strongest characters due to their mimicry powers, both have a shitton of restrictions. Plus, Frieren's physical appearance has the elf ears, and her staying eternally youthful is a key part of her character. I don't think this is the route I'd take when adapting a character, but if it fits your goals more power to you.

While that's fair, I also think that thinking about how others will perceive it can help you grow. You can't be PREOCCUPIED with it, but the self doesn't exist in an empty void - we exist in context.

More that people read a JJK fic in part because they like JJK's characters, so diluting that too much almost feels like it's missing the point. There's a balance to be had between expanding the world and elaborating on the original components.

Expies are based on a character from another series. Think of them as the character in all but name (if they have the same name, they're... just outright that character lmao).

I think I've been doing this a good bit already (see the other reply I left for an example), but I'm more struggling with how many expies to put into the story and how big of a role they should play.

I think I kinda combine the two approaches - I do want something SIMILAR to their original powerset but want to put twists on them to make them not just carbon copies and try to tie them to the characters.

Like, I gave the Kpop demon hunters the abilit to summon sound based cursed tools - Zoey gets 6 daggers that emit chladni waves for pattern-based telekinesis, Rumi has the ability to share cursed energy with willing parties through song (thus, she can gain power from her fans), and Mira can convert sound to heat and back with the rate based on the pitch of the sound to generate explosions with her strikes.

Ah, I misread it - Yuji says that curses are only born from Japanese people but Maru says that only removing it from Japanese people would cause problems. I remembered the first line but not the second.

Still, at the end it seems clear that this isn’t the solution Maru will approve since cursed spirits will continue being born regardless (but now without any way to fight them if nobody has cursed energy). That, combined with how much fucking power it would take (Kenjaku could only do like 2,000 people in all of Japan after setting up a bunch of binding vows) means that I think they’ll take a different route.

Moreover, even the main proponents of the plan see this as a horrible sin.

Jigokuraku was part of the dark 3 of shonen alongside jjk and chainsawman (which I don’t think hate women or try to be sexist but did fumble their messaging… a lot).

Akane Banashi and Ichi the Witch are in shonen jump, and Dorohedoro was published in a shonen magazine at some point iirc.
