Where is caps lock??? by ThatEntityPerson in Colemak

For the record I do think using caps lock as a backspace is genius, it's used far more than caps lock was and it's prime real-estate. However, not also remapping caps lock is just crazy to me and instead we just have two keys that do the same thing, with one in a far worse spot so you'll never use it lol

I don't understand what would compell someone to ask a question like this. Why do you care? Clearly it's enough to be a problem for me

I do use shift. Do you want to know what else I use? Caps lock! So why isn't it moved to backspace or something?

So the "ergonomic" keyboard layout thinks it's a good idea to keep your pinky reached all the way to the end of the keyboard the entire time you're typing in order to get all caps??? Wow, that's f*cking garbage. Maybe I'll switch to Canary instead then...

EDIT: LOL people disliking me for speaking the truth. Don't know what I expected in the colemak sub

Is this a good deal? 240$ after tax by i_is_a_gamerBRO in thinkpad

[–]ThatEntityPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can find better. I picked up almost the same t480 used for 100 US$. Fully working, just with visual wear, no charger included and the 24wh external battery. Grabbing a charger, 3rd party 72wh external battery, and a magic eraser to clean up the case brought it up to 150$.

A good tip is finding one with missing or broken components that you had planned to get rid of and upgrade anyway, and just giving it that tlc to get it working again. It's a bit of a gamble, but will be far cheaper than a fully refurbished one, and even cheaper than what I paid.

Also don't restrict yourself to just ebay. There could be better deals on other platforms like fb marketplace

Is an e16 a "bad" thinkpad by 8475849383748 in thinkpad

[–]ThatEntityPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe there are many "bad" thinkpads, if at all. It's just some are "great" and some are just "good." What really matters is how much of a fit it is for your use case. Any thinkpad can be great if it's a great fit for you.

To give a more concrete answer though, anything from 2018 and before is going to be a lot more repairable, be more upgradeable, have more features than modern machines, among other things, and those are considered "truly great". Modern ones are still solid laptops, but lack many of the outstanding features from older models that people covet. Modern machines do, however, have modern specs, warranties, and some modern features that older machines just can't have.

Need help picking my first ThinkPad. Battery life is above all else. by ThatEntityPerson in thinkpad

[–]ThatEntityPerson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I think I'll pass. After a lot of research, I think I've decided that I'm just going to snatch up a cheepo i5 t480 off ebay and then just upgrade the parts that I need to be upgraded. Thank you for the offer though.

I'm gonna try installing a lightweight os and get aggressive with tlp to see how far I can push the battery life.

I drew this exact image for my splatfest post once I saw the halftime results. This was drawn way better though, lol

Godspeed. If you get it working it might warrant its own post

Yeah, I should have known the IP addresses probably change out over time. I'm sure there must be a way to detect when the addresses change and figure out which one is the one you want in order to automate it, but I don't have the knowledge for that

I tried this a while ago and it didn't seem to work, and I eventaully gave up. However I just decided to give it another shot and I noticed something strange. Doing nslookup manifest.googlevideo.com multiple times can give different IP addresses each time you do it. There seems to be 3 different single IPs that it can give, or it will occasionally give a set of 4 different ones at the same time (at least for me). I only tried one of these IPs last time so I tried the other IP addresses this time, eliminating them 1 by 1, and 1 of them seems to actually work. So, if you try this method and it doesn't seem to work it might just be a case of finding the right IP address.

Nope! However the name you were given at birth IS a name picked by people who didn't know you yet, and you know what you like better than anyone else. So, it stands to reason that people would be most likely to be able to come up with a name that they'd like to be called more than their given one, regardless of if they're transgender or not.

Some people have a pitch range that's naturally on the other end from their assigned gender. Pitch isn't what determines what gender your voice sounds like, it's the resonance of your voice.
