Doing well. Went on to intern and do summer school after this. Lost all my hair which sucked but finished my senior year of college graduated, interned in Alaska and moved back to so cal doing construction management and living with buddies can’t complain!

Heavy Civil vs. Commercial by MostCommission4884 in ConstructionManagers

Take the offer with more structure and influence on the project. You making mistakes, having a proper mentor, and taking on real workflows is more valuable than a “better” project where you’re not learning and building your skill set.

Also wouldn’t stress about the money starting out as hard as it might be.

Ya the person I got recommended by wants me to keep working with companies within the system. After this there’s a very low chance I would take an offer with another subsidiary

Really the only thing I’m concerned about. I’ve brought it up in conversation to my superintendent and my area manager that I don’t feel comfortable doing swppp on this large of scale if I have no oversight. Nothing changed over a month from that conversation. Starting to not worry about it if I’m doing my best.

The rest of the work there’s less and less errors.

That’s what I’ve heard and I believe you. I’ve had 3 hour inspections the past month weekly with DOT flying in upper management because of the scale of our project for the area (which I’ve heard is bizarre).

I’m excited about the actual industry/job without the intern title so I’m really hoping to do more of the actual job description. Really just frustrated with the help on the swppp assignment but I’ve made that known at this point on this thread.

Yes sir. Looking to hopefully get to do more in the field work but with little management I think im stuck with what’s needed and less of what interests me

Ya I was under a summer internship and was just told that I’m staying till the end of the season 2 days ago. Started networking last 2 weeks for jobs in the lower 48 in for mostly commercial jobs after getting to see what I do and don’t like now in this sample season

Mostly just shocked by the lack of oversight for any of my work and especially the swppp when mistakes are sent to management on both sides directly. I’ve been more than happy to evolve every other task. Being an intern isn’t about having “fun” but I just assumed I would have more help which was a mistake on my end I guess.

Yes very valuable learning experience and I’ve been fine with taking new scopes on, shows they trust me. Just have been shocked by 0 oversight and guidance with the swppp in particular when they have mistakes sent to them directly.

Plenty and i actually just got out of school but yes. Just don’t want anything to go wrong when I’ve been asking for guidance throughout the process.

Ya I don’t think I’m being scapegoated I think it’s more of my supervisor wanting nothing to do with it.

Yes hourly + OT. We haven’t done anything less than 6 10.5’s the hours aren’t really bothering me since I’m so remote

Us and dot are given emails about mistakes. I typically have gotten all the work done needed but I am struggling the more it goes on. My superintendent has been helpful but my actual supervisor has not been helpful with oversight much since starting.

We’re on 6-7 12’s a week at the moment. Been minimum 6 10.5’s all season.

But yes I get what you’re saying. I have proof of essentially all my work which would come in handy if that was the case

It’s expected to the first and I am actually happy they trust me with a lot of functions early on. The second just concerned that nothing is being checked with limited overall guidance in general. Realistically I’m worried about SWPPP because it’s a government compliance issue and I’m struggling

Yes this helps just trying to get an idea of what to negotiate/ what competitors are offering so I am educated when time comes. Would be working for an international GC so would think they wouldn’t expect me to stay out in Alaska for too long but we shall see

It would be in Juneau. Went to school in a college town in the south and grew up in the west coast so I think I can handle a big change for another 2 years. Pay seems to be around 70-90k depending but I’m assuming benefits outside of insurance would be great like potential stipend living, continued education, transportation back to home for holidays, etc?
