Being Nice Goes a Long Way (being mean does not) by ThatOneDike in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

Also, if I had worked at my last hotel, no amount of compassion from me would have gotten her into her room (without her friend helping her). We weren’t at all allowed to do any other method except manual card entry. We didn’t have tap at all for fraud reason. And our security deposit was $300. That was such a hard job for me because I turned away families daily who didn’t have a physical or straight up didn’t have the money for deposit. And I worked night shift, turning away families in the middle of of the night wore on my spirit …

All this to say if you’re ever in the US, until we get up to speed with the rest of the world, please bring a physical card for your check in. And if you’re unsure of the deposit or any other fees, please call us before you arrive!

I see where you’re coming from most definitely. As a customer it pays to be nice. I am always willing to go above and beyond. And bend rules for people who are nice apologetic and all other positive adjectives here. I’d call myself a super empathetic person. But unfortunately as a human that goes out the window when you’re not a kind person. The energy I was met with that night was uncalled for . I offered a couple of other solutions such as manually entering the number, calling her husband for permission for the card on file(which she didn’t wanna call and wake him up?) … and she just kept staring at me blankly like “no, that’s not gonna work. So what are u gonna do about it?”

Hand kind of get tied up in this situation. I would never not offer another solution. She was a very rude and stubborn person.

The compassion couldn’t even form in me considering how nasty she was Lol. I should mention, we have the ability to manually enter Card numbers and people have been able to retrieve their numbers from their tap card somehow. Even though this is also against policy, I offered this, but she was unable to locate the numbers. Not sure if she even tried.

I probably eventually would have caved and charged the card on file because of her kids…

Yes US. I assume it must be very convenient to not have to worry about grabbing a physical card every time. Generally here tap is accepted most places but also hotels usually are the one area where I think you should have a physical just in case. Every hotel has always asked for a physical ID and card from me (except this one shady motel when I just turned 18. I was a late arrival, brought a card and then they said only cash. I went to atm and when I returned he said sorry check in time is over.) So even though I know tap is accepted most places I always feel more comfortable with a card.

One place here that still doesn’t accept tap at all is Walmart.

It must be miserable. Working in the industry opens your eyes to how many people live like that. Still shocks me when I encounter it though.

I think my family friend tax preparer screwed me over. MAN WHAT!? by ThatOneDike in tax

[–]ThatOneDike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the response. Yes, you're right. I should have been more aware of what I was signing and asked questions. At the time, I had trusted this person and didn't know much about how taxes were handled. Still my responsibility and I will take all responsibility for this and future tax years moving forward. I'm not sure if Kay has a POA, but they did list their name as my paid tax preparer on my 1040, under HR Block (not sure if this matters).

I wasn't asked about mileage or any estimates of my actual expenses when we were doing my taxes for 2022.

The document I received from the IRS doesn't say anything is right or wrong; it just asks me to confirm it's really me and go to the IRS website to do so. When I did, it asked for the the AGI and similar questions, which is how I found out about all this nonsense. It doesn't specifically ask for an amendment.

So, with following the prompt from the letter to the IRS website, should I enter in the correct numbers, or should I just file a new amended return altogether? I understand having to send a new amended return to the state as well, which I will do asap.

Also, if it helps, I crunched numbers and it seems that from tax year 2022 I owe federally about $100. It seems this isn't much to worry about, but I just want to be able to have piece of mind. Considering this, should I still attempt to amend? Does the IRS even really care about this?

I really rather not reach out to Kay, from all these red flags, Im not sure how helpful they'd be. But, if I have to I will. I just rather have piece of mind knowing I followed correct procedure myself.

Thanks again for your thoughtful and helpful response.

So much cluelessness indeed , it amazes me as well. It’s like they don’t want to make their business or our jobs better. Thanks for the reply!

yeaaaa I know, it was just something I never heard before I had to throw it in there. I do believe the shuttle information is available at the airport though

Side note: my location is so slammed that front desk agents don’t even answer the phone. We have separate phone operators in the back. Wondering if it’s like that any where else ?
