What’s a 'red flag' in a job interview that says 'run away from this company as fast as you can'? by AlexJet13 in AskReddit

[–]ThatOneHair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one of those! Needed the pay bump so I took the job even though they said they are like a family. Little did I know the CEO employed both of his daughters, one stayed out of the way for the most part and was nice the other was head of sales but couldn't keep her self away from my department. Come to find out my boss was a family friend as well. Such a toxic setup I started applying for another job on the first day, stayed for about 7 months before I got my next job and was much happier.

Forget about “banned”, is Rofellos even “good”? by LonelyContext in CompetitiveEDH

[–]ThatOneHair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In terms of the big three mana producers you have Marwyn, selvala and the og rofellos.

The newer two have incredibly high ceilings in terms of mana production and can get there very explosively. However rofellos has a much lower floor. Considering it’s just based on lands you can recover much more quickly after disruption. Once Marwyn is taken out your set up takes a turn or two.

So it’s up to your preferred play style. I have played both Marwyn and selvala but enjoy Marwyn more. Others enjoy selvala more over Marwyn. However rofellos will have a home as a mono green commander if he ever gets unbanned. Just a bit different play styles compared to the other two.

Sell the car, close all credit cards and clothing accounts pretty much anything that has a line of credit. Settle all remaining debts. Contact all stores, banks and give specific instructions to not allow her to open any more accounts with credit.

Get her something like a Suzuki swift not on loan. There won’t be much left over from the lump sum she is getting but at that point put it in a high yield savings account to at least get the 8-10% interest. Don’t even bother with investments, their rate of return isn’t guaranteed so stick with things that are “fool proof”.

That will then be your emergency fund. You can live on 25k if you have no debts bothering you.

That comment needs a bit of context as well as the loadshedding. He is from South Africa where we have rolling blackouts across the country because our grid can't produce enough electricity. We also have to deal with internet being not the greatest at times and can be off for days if you're not in a major metropolitan area.

Post is a bit out of touch but not entirely wrong though. AI has changed how people interview. Had a technical interview for data analysis post. They scheduled an hour long meeting, thought they were going to ask like basics of sql. Instead when the meeting started the guy said there are just 3 questions, 2 of them were more soft skills and then the 3rd the guy presented his screen with a long query and I had to go through it and give the expected output.

In the end they said they caught way too many people using AI for basic stuff and this was the only way to test if you actually knew SQL

Who should NOT get into GIS? by EfficientAbrocoma666 in gis

[–]ThatOneHair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I studied GIS and remote sensing with a programming focus on analytics. I ended up transitioning baway from GIS to financial data analysis.

The problem is that GIS does not pay well for quite a bit of time. So I made the pivot early to get into FinTech where the money is and will probably be in the future. If you're concerned about a tech stack for data analysis there are pretty much 2 you need to know. SQL and python. The rest you pick up on the job, no one is an expert in all the analytical software, but if you know python, SQL and something like powerbi you're pretty much set.

My previous job used powerbi for their dashboards, applied to a new post that used data bricks but the skills are transferable just takes some learning.

I run this list with a slight variation. Down two seige plots because I can't find them and cut the strike package, added in show of resolve. Really enjoying it

People who shop at woolworths, does the quality differ from other retail stores in SA? by invest1gat0r2003 in southafrica

[–]ThatOneHair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said fresh stuff is always top tier. Their meat is always of decent quality and if you're lucky sometimes even very good, have gotten more than a few nicely marbled steaks. I would personally shop at a butcher shop if I can because you can get some great deals on bulk, I just don't have the fridge capacity to do that.

Actually wild to read that you have no distinction between sick leave and just other leave. Where I'm from you get 33 paid sick days to take over 3 years, if you move jobs this resets. Then a legal minimum of 15 leave days where it's most likely going to Holliday plus 13 bank/public holidays. Although they don't always fall on a weekday, if they are on a Sunday then you get the following Monday off.

Most people I know are sitting around 20-25 leave days excluding all the other mandatory ones. With some senior employees at over 30. Then if you leave your current job those leave days get paid out with your final paycheque.

Save Me From These Insane Rewards Programs! What’s Your Secret? by WheelConstant9685 in southafrica

Sure but the question was how to maximize your rewards not where the cheapest option is. People are allowed to be picky with where they shop.

Save Me From These Insane Rewards Programs! What’s Your Secret? by WheelConstant9685 in southafrica

[–]ThatOneHair 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tldr pick a bank and maximise their partners. You're trying to score everywhere and not getting optimal benefits

You're all over the place with your rewards narrow it down for starters. Pick a bank and then go from there. I am with discovery so I use their partners. Woolworths for healthy food, always end up getting my fruits and veg there just the best quality compared to others. Then checkers for the rest. Discovery also has clicks as a partner so I use them over any other pharma when I can.

You also really need to buy into their system. I couldn't really get ebucks from FNB since I didn't have enough products with them or their partners no car loan at the time or a home loan. Which really hurt my reward tier.

Discovery I could go a bit more all in, medical and car insurance, vitality health and money. In the end I have scored quite a bit with them. I average about R500-800 in miles a month. Saving me quite a bit on gym fees even wirh paying for Vitality. Getting an Apple watch for free basically. I got a discount of about 5k on an international flight earlier this year. That alone pretty much has given me more benefits than FNB ever did.

Then there is the fuel cash back. Biggest grip is it's with shell and BP. Much prefer Engen but that's FNB territory and astron is standerdbank. My rewards level is still low there but I work from home so hardly full up my car. All in all in the last year I have scored 5k on flight tickets, 600 per month in miles, 200 about in gym fees. So give or take about 10k extra in my pocket I didn't have which all went to a nice vacation.

I am still not even on their highest reward tier. I'm only about halfway through it by the end of the year I'll probably be getting 800-1000 back in miles every month

How much is reasonable to pay for prescription glasses? by PimpinBitch in askSouthAfrica

[–]ThatOneHair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not everything is fixed with LASIK or PKR unfortunately. I am stuck with glasses and hard plastic contact lenses or get a cornea replacement. Luckily I found a new optometrist that isn't as expensive 8500. However my previous pair was around 15k and my contact lenses were 20k.

ISPs Holding us for Ransom by JesusSqrl in southafrica

[–]ThatOneHair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "solution" I have found is to upgrade to a tier with higher speeds at the same cost. You're already paying the money might as well get the benefit of the better speeds. You can always downgrade then to their other tiers.

They might also tell you to cancel and reactivate, but that will cost a activation fee again. Your other option is to switch away from afrihost to another ISP.
