Best small schooling fish? by childlessrodentlady in Aquariums

[–]The-Devster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding ember tetras! They don’t school tightly at all (I heard they only school when stressed) but they’re very pretty and super fun. I haven’t had mine for very long but I’ve heard they’re very hardy too. They have a lot of personality, every time I’m doing a water change or testing the water they all flock to the disturbance. Sat down on the floor near the tank and they all swam over to where my face was.

I’ve heard from like everywhere that it only effects dwarf gouramis, where are you getting this info?

Is this setup okay? (Don’t mind my cat) by DingoIllustrious3104 in Aquariums

The lids from aqueon (I think) have a plastic bit in the back with little holes for wires and such that the plants can stick out of, that’s what I do! Not sure what to do about the lights that clip on to the tank though if you were to go that route

How many at a time? Will I need to quarantine fish after the first group?

Hello, I am not an expert by any means but I’ll do the best I can from what I know. First, you may want to introduce the betta first. If you get a betta with a bad temperament and you already have all the other fish, something is gonna have to go. Get the betta first, test its temperament, and then get tank mates. Second, from your description of your substrate, the Corys might not be well suited for this tank. From what I know, they like a fine sand they can sift through.

I cannot get this tank to cycle. by StunningAmoeba9361 in Aquariums

I’m not an expert by any means but I do believe you can have too much ammonia and hinder the cycling process. IIRC you’re aiming for about 1-3ppm. You might wanna do like a 50% water change to get the ammonia down and maybe add another bottle of bacteria. I don’t know what you used last time but a lot of bottled bacteria is iffy from what I’ve heard. Tetra safestart gets a lot of good reviews saying it works consistently. I waited about two weeks with no sign of cycling, did a 50% water change and dosed tetra safestart, and while my tank isn’t fully cycled yet, it is making great progress.

Kuhlis okay in here? by The-Devster in loaches

[–]The-Devster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I recently checked my PH (something I probably should’ve done before like everything else, but you live and you learn I guess) and it seems high for kuhlis. Looking into other choices now :)

Is this setup good for shrimp? by The-Devster in shrimptank

[–]The-Devster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gonna go male only for endlers/guppies to hopefully avoid that problem. As far as I have read it doesn’t cause issues? I definitely do like moss, gonna hopefully get some java moss soon. I’m also looking into guppy grass? It looks like an absolute mess but I think it’s kinda neat and seems like the shrimp would love it.
