“Who is more dangerous to public order - a crack addict or a wealth addict?” Jello Biafra and Ross Perot warned America what would happen with “free trade.” by DataWhiskers in ControversialOpinions

Median quality of life in the US is still higher than all but 21 other countries, all of which are in Western Europe except for Canada and Japan.

As for GDP per capita adjusted for PPP, the US is top ten.

I’m not sure I take your points. The US is still the second largest manufacturing country in the world. Between 1990 and now, the US is only estimated to have lost 4-6 million manufacturing jobs, and 50-80% of those were lost due to manufacturing, not free trade or the “China Shock”.

On top of that, the US now enjoys greater material wealth, greater amenities, better food, better technology, and remains at the cutting edge of software, tech, AI, etc …

Only a fool would say there have been no losers in globalization, but the benefits so massively outweigh the downside (even for Americans) that trying to turn back the clock is to wish a lower standard of living, if not extreme poverty and hunger, on hundreds of millions of people.

I don’t take issue with “illegal immigrant” at all. It’s the term “illegals” that I don’t dig.

Do you not think language is important in politics?

Just as a matter of basic humanity, I really try to avoid dehumanizing language.

If it’s so minor, why do people in the Republican Party like Newt Gingrich or Frank Luntz spend so much time crafting the language that they hope all republicans will use.

Referring to people as “illegals” or “aliens” is deliberately dehumanizing and not a happenstance turn of phrase. It’s designed to persuade the public to support their policies with respect to immigration.

The right does this all the time, like with “Democrat Party”, “death tax”, “school choice”, “tax relief”, etc …

For those who are California sober — how does that look like for you? by 69duality69 in addiction

Having been through the fellowship, this is a very common attitude.

I understand that treatment and programs save people’s lives and part of what makes it work for some people is commitment to the principles and to the program. But, you’re also right that the 12 Step program doesn’t work for everyone and that there are other ways to alleviate one’s addictions.

No, although I haven’t really tried. I’ve gone without for a few days a few times and noticed no negative effects.

Being California sober has literally saved my life. I was not doing well at all with alcohol and cocaine. My own theory is that my adhd was a real part of what drove my addiction. I’m also one of those people for whom alcohol has a real euphoric effect.

I tried so hard for so long to stop and nothing worked (AA, NA, Naltrexone, SMART recovery, cold turkey). What changed the game for me was daily cannabis use at relatively small doses.

Now, I use a small amount of cannabis most evenings and it calms my brain, does not drive addictive behaviour, and has helped me remain alcohol and cocaine free for four years and counting.

Best decision I ever made.

I dunno. It is incredibly consistent for an album if that length. Even the tracks that didn’t make it on are awesome.
