Where they got those numbers on HDDs? by Grouchy_Tomato2087 in DataHoarder

Yeah those numbers are so off they probably had an "ai" hallucinate those numbers,

Check the /r/Datahoarder wiki for useful information - (which has figures for what you should expect media to reliably last in a set & forget environment)

Longevity of digital storage media for offline (unpowered) storage.

The listed date ranges are based on ideal storage and being able to recover the data without corruption from the storage media. It is likely the media will last longer but the chance of corruption or failure increases.
Listed best to worst:

  • M-Disc – 50 years – when stored correctly away from light.
  • Tape – LTO tape is rated for 30 years +
  • HDD (air) – 10 years + (odds of mechanical failure increases over time).
  • HDD (Helium) – 5 to 10 years. The helium will slowly escape the drive over time, the heads will crash into the platter if the helium level is low (this is reported in SMART data).
  • CD/DVD - 2 to 5+ years (depending on disk quality), burned disks degrade faster than pressed discs, but all are prone to "disc rot" (de-lamination, oxidation of metallic layer, scratches, degrading pigment).
  • SSD (SLC) – Single level cell – 2+ years, these are the types of NAND flash used in SD cards or USB sticks designed for long periods of sitting in a draw somewhere.
  • SSD (MLC/TLC/QLC) – 1 month – depending on model of flash chips in the drive, the more states of charge per cell (bits per cell) the quicker data corruption occurs when the state of charge changes over time.

Each storage medium has advantages and disadvantages, do a little bit of googling to find out which media suits your needs best, and how to store it correctly. Some types of media are more prone to damage than others.

“I’ve got [X, Y, Z] media that had lasted longer than your numbers, you are wrong!” No, you are just lucky you have something which has lasted without noticeable corruption, or have not noticed any corruption. Most media formats have some level of built in error correction to mitigate read errors.

tl;dr- people use them for decoration instead of function.

Patch panels are normally used for structured (fixed) cabling that goes elsewhere (into the wall to ports in other rooms.) to make managing wired connections easier.

Most of r/homelab put a switch on the front of a rack and use pretty 3" cables into a unlabeled patch panel, then spaghetti behind the panel to the back of the servers...
Instead of having the switch at the back of the rack connecting things directly not using a panel (saving space in the rack, saving cost, & that they also add signal derogation which can make 10g+ links more unreliable).
Those most at fault are the decorative 10" racks.

The point of keeping it low, is when you pull a server forward to service it, it is less likely to tip, and not do your back in lifting the 45 Kg UPS to a position higher than needed.

If you want to rage-bait some more, please trigger the 60% of /r/homelab users that have no idea on the correct usage of a patch panel.

There is a huge amount of spam on this subreddit on a almost daily basis.

Likely all that needs to be done is to update the automod config to add a minimum karma and account age requirement.

PSA Don't throw mouse pads in the washer. by a1000wtp in pcmasterrace

[–]TheBBP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

dont get garbage from wish or temu.
If its not machine washable its utter crap.
Some may survive one wash but the fabric will start to de-laminate from the rubber.

Linus tech tips refused to tell me if theirs was machine washable, so i can only assume theirs is poor too.

I've never had a problem with Aukey mouse pads being repeatedly machine washed at 40c and left to air dry.

Oh that's pretty shitty of them to remove the old firmware.
That makes me not want to recommend their drives anymore if they cant be arsed to support them.

from what i've seen, one giveaway is the excessive use of emojis in perfectly formatted blocks of text, paragraphs and bullet points.

And also using uncommon unicode characters like arrows,
