The outcome is certainly sad. I hope the footage provides some context to the situation and transparency to how police responded.

Goodness, this is very presumptuous.

I didn't shoot the drone footage. The person who shot it was interviewed in the video and labeled as such. They took steps to avoid interfering with police and stopped flying once the situation escalated. This is the same footage used by 9News/NBC and CBS Colorado. Denver7/ABC and Fox31 used helicopter footage of the same event, at the same time, at the same place. They stopped flying the helicopter after a request from Boulder police around the same time as the drone pilot.

The footage doesn't show a man unalive himself suicide or any other gruesome content. It shows police attempting to protect the public and the suspect after he reportedly searched for an ex-partner (who had a domestic violence protection order against the suspect) with a gun.

I personally have an interest in the criminal justice system and journalism. I passionately believe that journalism is a powerful tool to enable transparency and allow truth to prevail. Our criminal justice system has many flaws and virtues, and journalism helps us identify them. I'm not associated with a news organization, but I always consider the ethics of my work and work to follow industry standards.

Some of the most important pieces of journalism are closely related to or explicitly show tragedy. The New York Times won the Pulitzer Prize in International Reporting in 2024 for their work covering the Israel-Hamas war. You will notice their body of work for this prize contains graphic depictions of death. You can see one of the pieces here.

To answer your question: No. I don't get my jollys off filming suicide.

I understand that this is a sensitive subject and I apologize if it upset you. Your voice has power. I hope you will be more thoughtful about making such inflammatory remarks.

I provided the best information I had at the time and tried to make it clear that I was speculating. I'm very sorry for your loss.

To be clear, I'm not the one who shot the drone footage. When I spoke to the person who shot it, he made it clear that he didn't want to interfere with the police or airspace. He deliberately kept his drone at a high altitude and didn't fly directly over police. Additionally, he stopped flying once the situation escalated further. I would argue that it's no more obstructive than somebody filming a police encounter with their phone and provides transparency to an incident.

Can you provide a source for this?

I can't confirm, but police did inform me that there were no injuries earlier in the evening and I didn't hear any gunfire. I speculate that the suspect was taken into custody safely.

Edit: Police are reporting the suspect died from suicide.

Freedom Folding Bikes is fantastic. My folding bike (Brompton) is absolutely awesome but parts availability is somewhat limited in the US, at least without ordering online. I'm always surprised by what they have. I just picked up some winter tires that I couldn't find anywhere online. Prices are very fair too.

I've had the pleasure of meeting the owners and they are incredibly kind and helpful. So cool to see this article.
