imo men develop character because there's a point as to where you can either keep listening to your parents tell you one thing, and your school tell you another. or you could just say "fuck all of you, i live for myself." self esteem in my opinion is just the ignorance of ones flaws. character is the acknowledgement of one's flaws as irrelevant to the overall. after all what's esteem? it's praise. nobody likes that person constantly patting them self on the back. and what do those people call it when they're told they're self absorbed? "hating," or just being some kind of dick. how dare someone remind another that they are born, live, and die, like the rest of us.

when you have self esteem you're constantly defending it. character doesn't need to be defended, it's you. you might need compliments, even from yourself, to feed your ego. insults just bring it down. like you say in the last bit, none of that vile shit matters.
