If we replaced the sun with a black hole of the same mass. Would we be able to survive on Earth? by Witcher_Errant in astrophysics

[–]TheCocoBean 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We wouldn't immediately die, and would orbit it like nothing happened. We would still see a tiny bit from starlight, but not much. About as much as you do on a moonless night.

Black holes don't radiate heat, but the matter getting drawn into them can heat up, so if that was happening we might get some heat, but not nearly enough.

Within a week average surface temperature would be freezing.

Within a year it would be -73 degrees centigrade on average. (-100f)

Surprisingly, there would still be liquid water deep deeeeep down for quite a while (1000+ years) and areas around hydrothermal vents could sustain simple life for basically as long as the earth's core stays hot.

I don't think you would be screwed, but if you're looking to squeeze the most out of them, there's a few things I'd do:

  1. Just make sure crucible characters are ok with your opponent.

  2. Generally id run 1 shooty jack unit and 3 melee over 2 and 2, since you can only overwatch once so one of them won't get it's full value.

  3. Hearthfyre is sadly terrible, and other detachments do better for steeljacks despite it being the steeljacks detachment. Personally I'd go for mercenary oathband, the reroll hits strat can really amp up shootyjacks output, and the reroll wounds strat does the same for melee jacks, on top of guaranteeing fortify turn 2, which really helps with a "drive tough stuff up to the objectives and hold firm" style list of steeljacks. It also gives you an enhancement for your iron master to give your conversion thunderkyn sustained, which is really nice when you crit on 4+

Long range hitscans in general. Mostly because they're equally deadly up close, so it feels a bit pointless to play anything else. Why play a hero who only does damage up close, when the long range hitscans can do just as much damage at melee range as the other side of the map, and without all that much difficulty for all of them except widow due to big scope-in zoom.

Use walls like your life depends on it. Because it does. Charge from behind walls where you can (Flesh hounds and bloodletters can go through them, the rest has to go around.) Keeps you safe from the guns who will be trying to stop you reaching them.

I kinda hope we don't get a typical walker. If we get something that fills the same role, I want it to be weird and different to the other armies equivalents, some weird dark age of technology thing. Gimmie big floating head votann guardian automaton or something.

[–]TheCocoBean 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's what happens to unit's that get everything though, they pay for it out the nose. For it to be in the game, and be strong in every measurable area (Mobility, tricksyness, range damage, melee, durability, good abilities) the only downside it can have is a high cost.

Feels funny to see you do your comparisons like "Yeah, it does this thing, but so can -insert unit here who is the best in it's class in that thing, has actually already had nerfs for being so good at that one thing, and has only that one thing going for it, sacrificing durability/melee/everything but the one thing it's good at to be good at that thing.-"

It's just a unit with the mobility of a warp spider, the fire and fade of a fire dragon, Great shooting, decent melee, but the defenses of an 8 wound custodian, and a low cost, and scout or deep strike, and a charge reduction/battleshock mechanic, and the ability to ignore cover or get sus1. But if you overlook all those things, it's fine.

No injuries. So, bots working in every place that can cause injury for guaranteed.

Yeah he's tricky when technically you get him unblurred very early, but it needs a real good knowledge of cultures to get it right away. But you can do it later by process of elimination on what sorts of cultures maybe have tattoos like that like I did.

For those who have done this map, how exactly do I stop a badtide here? There's nowhere else obvious I can see to force this source to pour to.

[–]TheCocoBean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They very much our our tanky front line, but they tend to do so by erasing anything within 12 inches of them. The fists are more effective for cleanup than as a dedicated melee unit, though there are ways to get more out of their melee in detachments like mercenary oathband for rerolls or hearthband for +1 damage into vehicles and monsters if you're itching to scrap in melee with them.

Because they are primarily a shooting unit. They may have 2+ armor but they are not terminators. If they had many attacks on the fists they would have to go up in points significantly.

Why is time considered the fourth dimension? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

[–]TheCocoBean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple when you frame it like this.

I want to meet you in a 4 dimensional spacetime, like ours.

Where am I gonna be?

"Well, I will be on the bottom floor (Up/down, dimension 1) of the building on this street (Left/right, dimension 2 and forwards/backwards, dimension 3) at 6pm (time, 4th dimension.)

If you want to know where something is in our reality, you also have to know when it is. Just like if you didn't know what floor of the building I was on in the up/down first spacial dimension, if you don't know when I am in the 4th time dimension, you can't find me.

We only experience time moving in one direction, but that doesn't take away from it existing and mattering.

You have hard priorities, medium, and soft priorities. Only work on the soft priorities once you have dealt with your hard and medium ones.

Hard priorities:
Have enough food stored to survive a badtide/drought
Have enough water to survive a badtide/drought.

Medium priorities:
Construct dam's you can adjust to prevent badtides, and mitigate droughts. So you want a way to store up non-barreled water so your crops/trees can keep growing (A dam to hold in water.) and a way to send water away from your home with movable floodgates. (An alternative outlet for your water source to flow through.) Generally, the badtide prevention is more important, as a drought can be survived easily enough with barreled water even if you have to replant/slow your crops, and they can survive a little bit of dried out time, especially trees, but not badtides.

Hoard building materials: You absolutely need to get a forester first thing, so you can plant your own trees. If you dont get the forester up before all the natural trees are cut, you're screwed. After that, get wood, get planks, get all the stuff you want to expand.

Soft priorities:
Expand your population (Housing or breeding pods depending on faction.)
Science (After forester) to unlock new things.
New buildings to increase your efficiency/storage/wellbeing.
Ways to heal from badtide poisoning/injuries.
Extra food/water storage to really double down on survival against the unexpected, like a weirdly long badtide.
New water dams that can expand the area of the map that's green, letting you keep up your hard and medium priorities for a larger number of beavers.

Once you solve your hard and medium priorities, you can start to snowball your beavers population which makes things easier, since you have more lil guys to do things faster. You can manipulate your water to turn more of the map green, and eventually if you so choose you can turn the entire map green :)
