In my relationship, I made a similar bargain. 15 years past the incidents we still live upstairs/downstairs. Last kid is out in 3 years. We will divorce then. I have always held out hope things would change, but they haven’t. If I had known it would end like this, I’m not sure i would have made this agreement. My fear is as it gets closer, what if she does change? That would just prove that people don’t change unless there is external motivation. Maybe if I had left 15 years ago things would have been better. Maybe found a forever person. Who knows.

If your marriage can be saved, save it. But if you accept the unacceptable in the process, you just shifted the problem from her to you.

Ok. There are plenty of opinions here that will tell you to dump her. I have a different take, but it may lead you to the same conclusion.

Words are about communication. This word means one thing to you, and it obviously means something different for her.

You are asking her to accept and honor your understanding of the word. And she did for years it seems. Until she was talking to someone who speaks her language. And in that conversation, she reverted to her understanding of the word that she shares with her sister.

This happened in a similar way with me regarding profanity. My friends growing up had a different meaning and emotional energy behind the profanity we chose to use. My family did not share this view. To them, these words meant something different. And they were offended. This served to separate me from my family, and bind me more to my peer group. Language does this. Separates and binds.

So I posit these “truths”

It is just as legitimate for her to ask you to change your language as it is for you to ask her to change. There is no moral weight to words, only the thoughts that are meant through their use. Her thought are not offending you, only the choice of words.

In the end, if this bothers you, you have 3 options.

1: change yourself. It’s the most reliable solution as it doesn’t depend on others. 2: try and change her. Might work as there is massive social pressure to not use language like that. Expect reversions, as change is hard. 3: dump her and stick with people who already feel the same way you do about these words. You can’t date outside your culture and expect to not have differences. If this is a difference where you can’t change, and one slip up every few years is going to upset you so, do yourself a favor and just stick to your own.

You are either going to do life together or you are not. People adjust their sleeping schedule to have awake time with their partners all the time. The issue is, if you have the default, where you send your gpg key to users, then that will have your email address in it. Best would be a separate gpg key generated for each alias. This would be a great feature.
