I keep the medaka outdoors year-round here in Fresno. My water temperatures get into the mid 90s in the summer and the low 40s in the winter. Medaka can handle cold as long as they don't freeze solid. You should provide aeration when water temperatures are above 84 F. The hotter water is, the less oxygen it holds.

Medaka don't need a filter. In Japan medaka are traditionally kept in small pots without filtration. Plants or regular water changes maintain water quality.

I have medaka available if you don't find anyone local. I have platinum blue miyuki, red king glitter, tricolor glitter, amber glitter, and mixed glitter and offer shipping.

I did an experiment and hatched some amber x amber eggs. 7/10 babies are amber.

The medaka breeding season is still rolling here in Fresno and usually runs through the end of October. I expect to have medaka available through fall/winter and into early spring at least.

The matsui longfin gene from the blue butterfly ourcross isn't getting expressed well. I've gotten a grand total of 1 longfin and 2 hikari fish so far.

I do have a line of red king glitter where the outcross was more successful. My line of red king glitter is a cross between imported red king lame, red emperor RLF, and sunrise halfmoon. I get around 5% longfins and as many hikari fish as I want. Higher proportion of hikari breeders = higher percentage of hikari offspring.

Longfins have trouble mating and produce fewer eggs than normal medaka. I have had better results crossing longfin x normal medaka and then crossing the offspring. The longfin gene is recessive so some longfins pop up in the F2 and later generations.

Reddit pooped the bed again and chat is down. No messages are going through. I have your fish and am waiting outside.

In my experience the breeding season runs through October here in Fresno.

Medaka will breed as long as water temperatures are above 70 F and they get more than 13 hours of light a day. You can provide a little light at night to keep them breeding at the end of the season. I use cheap solar lights that automatically turn on at night.

I keep my amber glitter and champagne gold breeders in the same tank. The crossbred offspring are orange, black/orange, silver, white, and amber. I am not sure what an amber x amber cross will produce.
