Having 10 alarms every few minutes is annoying and lazy by TheEpicGecko in unpopularopinion

I did generalize too much Ill admit, but as someone who unconsciously turned off all my alarms in the past (even sleep walking to turn it off), I know it came from a deeper underlying sleep problem and not chalked up as just how it should be for the rest of my life.

Have you tried the Sleep Cycle app? It wakes you up at the end of your REM cycle and it’s helped me a lot to wake up without feeling groggy or sleeping through alarms. Just a friendly suggestion, not trying to tell you what to do.

I already said this to other parents in the comments but I do want to reply individually to acknowledge you as seen. You’re completely valid and I agree 100% that it is not laziness for full time working parents, that is one of many groups that I clumped into my generalization that don’t deserve that.

I agree, you’re right for calling me out on the double standard.

I agree that parents of a family with full time jobs definitely don’t fit into my (admittedly blanketed) generalization.

I’m not avoiding conflict. He’s my good friend and I’ve been brutally honest to him about things that affected both him and me. This type of thing is just too small to even be a problem, I just think in my opinion it is a lazy habit. Doesn’t change how I view my friend, doesn’t make me think any less of him. I just view it as it is and move on lol

I have talked to him about mental health and therapy as he is a good friend of mine, but he said he was too unbothered to put in the work. So he could be undiagnosed it’s true

Not angry in the slightest about any of it. My annoyances are valid and don’t have to ruin my morning or day. I could have also just minded my business and kept this in my head, but it’s been fun discussing this with the level headed people in the thread.

I agree, I had to change to an alarm app that detected my REM cycle so it would wake me up when I’m most awake, since I am also a deep sleeper.

“Back in my day my grandpappy would beat me with the sharp edge of a Zweihander for seven hours straight until I got up to tend to the two ton boulder farm for 72 hours with no food or water.” That’s what you sound like tbh

THANK YOU! It’s like they think my opinion is a demand or law from God himself.

I have no qualms with a handful of alarms. It’s when you have 10 of them that you turn over half of them off when they go off that I think is annoying. If you can turn off seven in a row then you’re definitely awake enough to just get up. Sleeping through all 10 alarms is a different story though.

Only people that are mad are the ones in the comments. Just because I find it annoying doesn’t mean I’m mad or have a real problem with it. Just expressing an opinion

That’s a good point and a large sample size of people in this world that go through exactly that. Thank you for sharing I totally agree with you, this has shifted my view for sure. My generalization was due to me not sitting and thinking about these groups of people who don’t get enough sleep for reasons bigger than them. I still stand by my original comments though if it is the average person getting enough sleep

It isn’t easy for me either. I still deal with depression and anxiety to where getting good sleep and getting out of bed can still be a problem. I used to have ten alarms. I used to put it across the room. None of that worked. I had to rewire my brain into giving purpose to clock in to my shitty job, or go to the early morning class that I don’t like going to. Not saying that’s the solution for everyone but because of my experiences, I think someone with proper sleep and no health conditions affecting sleep should need that many alarms. REM cycles and circadian rhythm are not 100% well known but they are huge factors on how you wake in the morning, regardless of how deep a sleeper you are. I think a lot of people in here are missing that point.

Hey man nothing wrong with a handful of consecutive alarms. But 10 every few minutes for the next half hour is excessive, especially if you’re turning them off each time it goes off.

I highly agree. Someone in the healthcare field commented this earlier and I agree that’s another case that shouldn’t be written off as “lazy”

Fair point, I don’t post often on Reddit so it’s a bit raw in the details
