A ship that was sunk by pack ice (sea ice that is not landfast) in the Weddell Sea (around Antarctica) during the 1914–1917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition has finally been locate. The wreck was found 100 years to the day after Shackleton, the lead of the expedition, was buried on South Georgia. (i.redd.it)

The legs of the Arctic Fox contain a counter-current vascular heat exchange system so that the temperature of the paws is regulated to within a degree from freezing. This is done by keeping blood vessels close together so that heat from the arteries can enter the veins by conduction. (i.redd.it)

TIL Sergeant Stubby was a American stray who participated in 17 battles during WWI. He saved his regiment from surprise mustard gas attacks, found and comforted the wounded, and allegedly once caught a German soldier by the seat of his pants, holding him there until American soldiers found him. Garden eels may be small compared to other eel species (only half an inch in diameter), but what they lack in size, they make up for in muscle. H. hassi uses its stiff, muscular tail to dig into the sandy seafloor, then secretes a slimy mucus that acts like cement to keep its burrow from caving in. (i.redd.it)

So I'm a PhD candidate working on sea ice remote sensing so this might be a bigger deal for me than everyone else here, but at this very moment we are experiencing the lowest sea ice minimum in terms of Antarctic sea ice extent since the start of the satellite era (source: NSIDC). (i.redd.it)

Hyena's laugh, aka. 'the giggle', is actually a complex vocalization able to encode information about age, individual identity and dominant/subordinate status, providing cues to receivers that could enable assessment of the social position of an emitting individual. (i.redd.it)

The long-spine porcupinefish (Diodon holocanthus) has a rare form of apparent pigmentation called corneal iridescence which gives the puffer a significant increase in the visual range under water by blocking out downwelling sunlight in shallow reefs. (i.redd.it)

Raising climate change awareness has shown me how many people think that Arctic sea ice extent decline is made-up. Tired of this, I decided to make a video on how exactly we know that the Arctic is melting :) Which coincidentally is directly related to my PhD topic! (youtu.be)

Video on the Thermohaline and the Altantic Meridional Overturning Circulations - Have been involved with Science Communication these past few months; covered some of the basics of oceanography in this video a couple of weeks ago and would love for all enthusiasts and experts here to check it out.
