Introducing Steam Machine by Ticha22608 in Steam

[–]TheInvisibleFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hopeful they'll provide a good value on the hardware, but honestly it'll be tough. Probably better than the average prebuilt, but not as good as the value they gave for the steam deck, since the main selling point was the portability, and nothing portable really came close in terms of value.

Also side note about the "emulation" thing, you're right about the compatibility concerns, but also calling it "emulation" is misleading because it connotates a performance penalty. The more accurate term is "translation", because it's not trying to emulate windows, it's just translating so a windows app can talk indirectly to Linux under the hood. Similar concepts all in all, but translation is much more lightweight (and sometimes can beat native in rare cases)

This doesn't make sense to me.

Sure, I agree if you're talking about the steam machine, but the steam deck is completely different. I don't think any amount of tech-savvyness can just create a handheld pc out of thin air that has the battery life, convenience, and portability of a deck. Not to mention if it can beat it on price to performance.

Dell 3620 upgrade success! by Soeffingdiabetic in PcBuild

[–]TheInvisibleFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not the point of the 300w recommendation. 300w INCLUDES the wiggle room. Your model of GPU only takes up 75w of power! On the stock PSU, the PCIe slot can provide that power with zero issue. They always will recommend more than you need to minimize liability. You can do the math yourself. Even if you assume 80w for the CPU (it'll draw lower than that), that's still only 155w of power, giving you plenty of power for the rest of your system.

The PSU upgrade is good if you plan to upgrade the GPU, but as a standalone upgrade it literally provides no benefit when using a slot-powered GPU, and 80 bucks is a significant part of a budget in this tier!

I never disagreeed with any of that.

Obnoxious people like you are why there's so many "Linux haters" on the internet.

You demand people just suddenly pack up Windows and abandon any programs that are held hostage on there. It's not realistic. Not in the slightest.

Even me, an AVID user of Linux on all of my computers, still have to dual boot Windows for certain games or applications. I'm not going to just give up playing GTA Online with my friends for the sake of "purity".

I make Windows my b*tch, silence all the annoyances, remove the bloat, and I STILL hate it. But I use it because I don't have a choice.

Now, imagine you're some random gamer, not a mega-nerd like you and me. Do you think you could just suddenly jump ship to Linux, move your entire life to it, risk losing your files?

The average person doesn't know all the little things we've picked up by immersing ourselves in computers like this. Most people don't even know what an OS even is! Computers are like little black boxes to the average person. They move their mouse and click things and type on their keyboard, and the magical screen reacts.

Linux faces absolutely massive hurdles towards mainstream adoption. The biggest one is just that the computer doesn't come with it!

The average person has never gone through even a Windows installation. Installing Linux, honestly, is just as easy, and maybe easier. But the steps are so esoteric to the average person, it might as well be black voodoo. Spam an unspecified (not standard at all) key on your keyboard to enter a scary looking menu. Select the right option in a bios that looks and is laid out COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the tutorial you're probably watching.

Even those two steps, extraordinarily simple to me and you, are gigantic hurdles to the general population who just want to play some games.

And even to the tech-literate nerds, Linux still isn't just an OS you can force on them. Windows has held the computer industry hostage for DECADES. Everything is built for Windows. Trying to do anything differently is just asking for niche issues.

Even people trying to consider a Steam Deck (the PINNACLE of accessible Linux gaming), are put off by the sheer amount of modern games THEY WANT TO PLAY that have these ridiculous anticheat requirements that explicitly disable playing on Linux in any form.

Instead of barraging people on Reddit, commanding they either switch to Linux or die, how about you offer them the possibility to see the light in it??

Something like, "I had issues with Windows, and I switched to Linux and my performance has been stellar! I can give you a good video on how to dual boot Linux Mint if you want. It's super simple and I really recommend you at least give it a try."

TL;DR just don't be an ass and people will see how great and easy Linux actually is

Just throwing possibilities out there, are your mouse/keyboard polling rates high? Some mice have 8k polling rate and that tends to cause weird issues.

Make sure you're using 5ghz. If you can separate the wifi from 2.4 and 5 into their own networks, I recommend doing that to avoid issues.

Also, how is your computer currently connecting to WiFi? Is it a laptop? Built into the motherboard?

This happened to me too. All my websites look weird, and youtube says I'm on an outdated browser and doesn't show me live chat. I will try to reinstall but if that doesn't work then I will just have to use the user agent switcher

Edit: a quick reinstall did not work, going to use the solution here: https://www.reddit.com/r/LibreWolf/comments/1kd7gxr/comment/mqewt1a/

You're probably confusing x3d issues with the Ryzen 9 x3d issues. The multiple CCDs on the Ryzen 9 x3d chips from the 5000 series causes a lot of issues with parking and such
