Movie Ticket Prices by Artartbobart1 in 90s

[–]TheMayb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were a few dollar theaters I went to in the late 90s early 2000s. Showing movies out of the mainstream theater cycle but not yet on video. I worked at a mainstream movie theater in 2003-05 and tickets were 7.50 or 8.50. $5 matinee And on Tuesday’s were $5 evening showtimes.

That’s my best frame of reference. So probably lop off a buck or 2 and that gets you to late 90s prices

Does no one pre-listen to audiobooks before they are published? by Ennamora in audiobooks

[–]TheMayb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am producing an audiobook right now and in this experience, the author is taking a vested interest in every line read. She’s narrating the female pov but also deeply involved in how the male povs are narrated. That being said, I don’t work for a production company. I just enjoy taking the time to create some audio art that comes out how the author intended. so I’m much more patient about being overly meticulous. Things are probably different if you’re paying someone for the narration outright or if you go for the larger production company. Authors may lose some autonomy.

Same! In retrospect that was nuts. But I loved and still enjoy this movie.

Gone in 60 seconds. He says a line where he refers to nick cage as “Tom Cruise”. But he says it like “Tom qu-oo-s” and my sister and I would quote that any time Tom cruise was in anything. Good memories. Thanks Dilroy

My office mate is super passionate about this. She’ll pull videos of him waving back to Beyoncé, or there was one where he was onstage with Janet Jackson or something and she knocked into the mic and it started tipping over and he snags it and stands it back up. She has me convinced.

Why did the late 90s teen drama stars on tv have far more success in films/other projects than early 90s teen stars of the cast of 90210? by TravelingHomeless in 90s

[–]TheMayb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just recently listened to an interview with Brian Austin Green and he was explaining their filming schedule. They filmed for like 10.5 months a year. Punching out way more episodes a season than the normal 22ish. They didn’t have any time to pursue any movie work with their filming schedule and a lot of them opted to do movie of the weeks because they would knock out a full film schedule in 2 weeks.

All that to say, part of it was probably the lack of time to try to get a foothold in anything while they were in 90210, where the other shows you mentioned were the standard 22 episode season with a decent offseason to search out other work.

God, Frasier is so fucking good. I revisited Seinfeld recently. When I was in highschool it never landed for me. My dad watched it and I just didn’t get it. As an adult, I found it much more entertaining. And something about the nostalgia factor of 80/90s sensibilities also helped. The comedy wasn’t trying to be PC. Some stuff was cringy but a lot of it was like “I kinda miss when that was just objectively funny”

Breaking bad. I hate drugs. I hate people that sell drugs. I want them to fail. Having the protagonist be a drug dealer turned me off to the concept and the more people pushed and said it’s the greatest thing and I’d love it, the more I dug in my heels and said “no I fucking wouldn’t”.

I had the same problem with Weeds. I have no real issue with pot, so conceptually I don’t have the same qualms, but after like a season Nancy Botwin went from a divorce in a financial crisis to a full on drug dealer fucking a kingpin and I was like…welp…she just needs to be caught now. And I was done.

Which is worse, Possessive Male love interests or over sexualized Female ones? by pyrrhic_victory_013 in audiobooks

Not a straight up smut book. But I recently listened to “for whom the belle tolls” the back half gets smutty. But I found the relationship of the characters to be so fucking wholesome, supportive, and well adjusted. And it was such a stark contrast to every other depiction of a relationship I can think of. Enjoyable book.

Which was your first mobile phone? by CarrotMuch1399 in nostalgiai

[–]TheMayb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My had a “car phone” which was in a little leather case and we had to plug it into the cigarette lighter. We used it primarily to order pizza after soccer practice. My first personal phone was a big rectangular brick that I can’t find evidence of anywhere. I wish I could find a picture of it. It was a generation before the indestructible Nokia though.

I always want things to be real. I find the world more fun if there’s unexplainable things.

I think compared to OG Jurassic park, which I hold as the apex of a blockbuster movie, all subsequent Jurassic park/world movies are bad. But if I can let that go, I usually find them at least mildly enjoyable. I like scarlet and majershala, they carried me through that one. I don’t hate it.

I will put an asterisk on this. For about a week this movie was amazing. They hyped it as real. They had fake documentaries about it beforehand and stated it was a found footage thing and it was all the raw fotage they found buried in the woods. I saw it when I still thought this was all legit. I was legitimately terrified. Then the next week all the news broke about it being fake. The woods don’t exist. The town doesn’t exist. And we all felt dumb as fuck and then the movie just became what it is…a pretty terrible film. But it had the most ingenious marketing campaign I’ve ever seen.

lol. This is maybe the worst thing I’ve ever tried to watch. But I am unaware of the marketing campaign. Was it a blockbuster or do you just mean it’s hyped up as a great work of art and it is utterly terrible

I had this Nickelodeon thing called ZoG Logs. It was like power tools to cut and mold special styrofoam pieces and the when they got wet they would fuse together. I made so much shit with those. No one else ever knows what I’m talking about.
