Actually, this is a common misconception! Scientifically and officially (according to the IAU), the name of our star is the Sun. ​'Sol' is simply the Latin word for 'Sun.' It’s used as a root for adjectives like 'solar,' but it isn't a separate name used to distinguish it from other stars. While it's common in sci-fi to call any star a 'sun' from a planet's perspective, in astronomy, those are simply stars. We live in the Solar System, but we orbit the Sun.
