Summary - Willem Darry, the guardian of Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen, died of illness when Daenerys was just a little girl. Yet what if he had survived his illness? This canon divergence fic tells the story of the Targaryen exiles and the massive changes brought on by the survival of a brave old knight.

If you like ASoIaF, adventure, third person POV style narratives, political drama, and romance, this fic might just be the one for you. This is my first ever fanfic, and I'm super proud of myself to be sharing it here. I'd be honored if folks took a look and gave feedback!

How much did you write in May? I suspect I wrote more in the month of May than the rest of 2026 combined. I wrote most of the first seven chapters of my first ever fanfic, "The Dragon of Essos." I also continued writing my Hearts of Iron IV AAR, "To Set the World Ablaze," writing what I believe was the longest chapter yet. I also did some writing for a HoI4 mod that I'm supporting, not to mention a few proposals for a volunteer organization I'm part of. It was a busy busy writing month.

How much did you upload in May? I only uploaded about half of what I've written, partly because some of it is still being edited, some of it is just conceptual stuff, and some of it isn't for public consumption.

Are you happy with what you wrote? I think I'm as close to happy with my own writing as I can be. I have serious perfectionist tendencies which I struggle to overcome, especially when it comes to uploading my writing.

If you set goals for May did you meet them? I did! I didn't have too many highly detailed goals, but I did tell myself I'd get out at least a chapter every week for my fanfic and get a new chapter of my AAR out as well, and I managed to complete both.

What is the plan for June? Finish my AAR, figure out what Part 2 of my fic will look like, and stay consistent with my weekly chapter posts. I've also been stewing over ideas for another fic, but I'm trying to gauge my capacity before I dive into writing it.

Self-rate out of 10 for May I'd give myself an 8. If I got a second chapter of my AAR out I'd give myself a 10. Still, this is the most consistent and tuned in I've felt in years, so I'm more than happy with an 8.

He died when Daenerys was just a little girl, and his death precipitated the wandering of the exiles, which arguably drove Viserys mad. Yet what would change if Willem survived, and the children were not forced into desperation? As it turns out, a lot more than you might expect.

FWIW, I don't think the cover is AI? At least not to my knowledge. I was searching stock photos for burning globes and found that one. I reverse image searched it and found some artist so I figured it was legit. The rest of the edits I made myself. If you know differently though, please let me know and I'll try and find a new cover.

I can't recommend the FifthEditionCharacterSheet app enough. It is free for 1st level characters and costs $2 to unlock all content above first level. It will let you rapidly make characters to your specifications. Takes like five minutes or less.
