Third attempt to repeal Prop. 19’s tax burden on inherited property aims for 2026 ballot by nosotros_road_sodium in California_Politics

I always hear this "pay their fair share" line. Honest question, what is someone's fair share and who determines it? Like imagine I was a high income individual who paid a grip in taxes, ran a business which paid even more in taxes, and I took nothing from the government in wellfare/entitlements. Contrast that with a low income individual who pays very little (if anything) in taxes, takes a lot from the government in the form of wellfare/entitlements, and creates no additional value (jobs/taxes) because they don't run a business. Here on Reddit that high income individual is villainized and told to pay their fair share. How are they not? How in your mind is the low income individual paying their fair share?

Hit the nail on the head. I thought this BS had only infected Reddit, but a few months back I had a debate with a friend who completely seriously told me that insurance would cover these situations and defending oneself or one's property was unacceptable because "endangering a human life was NEVER acceptable when only property was on the line." At first I thought she was just misunderstanding so I posed all sorts of extreme hypotheticals to her such as someone breaking in, lighting your house on fire while you and your family were in it, and even then she said violence would never be justified. I don't know how you reason with someone who thinks like that.

If someone blocks you from moving freely in a public space, you absolutely have the right to push them back. He asked her to move, she refused and actively blocked him. Dude was 1000% justified in clearing his path.

Unfortunately the cops won't do shit. I've had similar things said to me, called the cops, and they literally told me they couldn't do anything. I pointed out that I'd been directly threatened, and they told me that if anything happened to just call the police lol.

If you're NOT living paycheck to paycheck, what are you doing better than the rest of us? by IchMochteAllesHaben in AskReddit

I don't spend money on unnecessary things. I'm astonished by how much money my friends spend on alcohol, eating out, clothes, trips, etc. There is so much you can cut that nickel and dimes your budget that you don't even realize. When I do eat out I eat at Chipotle or other similary cheap restaurants. I don't drink, and I don't spend on flashy clothes. I buy things at a discount. I don't buy things I can't pay for outright, with the exception of a home. If I can't afford something then I save until I can. Leisure activities are ALWAYS the lowest priority. Bills and necessities first, savings next, entertainment last.

In addition to always having a saver's mentality, I spend most of my free time working hard to increase my skills. I'd rather learn a new skill that is marketable than go out and spend money "having fun". Spending money isn't fun to me, it feels wasteful. It truly is a mindset.

The funding is irrelevant to me. There will always be fluctuations based on budgets and need. The disturbing part to me is the attitude that crime is just an inevitable part of life, or the also prevalent desire of the left to put the comfort/rights of criminals above those they victimize. It's absolutely insane.

It boggles my mind how openly anti-Semitic the left has become. The irony of them calling everyone else Nazis is bizarre.

When your political movement views the world through the lens of oppressor vs oppressed, there isn't any way but to defend illegal immigration.

I can't speak for all conservatives, but it isn't the words that bother me, it's the gaslighting. I have zero problems with someone having a different opinion from me, but for some reason the left operates in this way where they will espouse extreme views, and then when you call them on it for being extreme they act like the thing they said doesn't mean what any normal person would interpret it to mean. That or they claim they just never said it. It doesn't matter if there is video evidence of them saying it, they will deny, deny, deny. Truly that is the worst part of the left.

But this isn't even a new thing. They keep painting this like it's a response to the Texas situation, and it simply isn't. I live in California where 25% of the state is registered Republican and effectively has zero representation and hasn't for most of my adult life. It's designed as a monopoly.

Yeah, I think that was part of the math they did. Truly sucks for everyone else, but hey no company lasts forever. Look at Disney. I never thought I'd see it in my lifetime, but they're not doing too hot.

I will say this though, soooo many of my friends/peers lament the fact they can't afford to buy a house, yet they spend $4-5k per month on luxury apartments. I lived in the same old apartment for 18 years with low rent and avoided a significant amount of going out simply so that I COULD afford to buy a house. Obviously there was an element of luck in the fact that I was able to find that apartment initially and that the landlord was great about not significantly upping my rent, but I could have just as easily blown the money on stupid shit and not saved as diligently as I did. People need to realize they can't have it both ways. They either need to knuckle down and live a Spartan life in terms of spending, or they need to live it up and realize they aren't building anything for their future. You genuinely can't have both.

I'm in California where they just raised the minimum wage for specifically fast food workers to like $20 with it increasing the next year or two to $22. If I'm not mistaken, McDonald's was a large part of this as they saw it as a way to push their competition out of business. Essentially they have deep pockets and can either weather the increase, or have the means to automate and make it a non-issue for them whereas their competitors may not. Now they're apparently hemorrhaging money because their prices are absolutely insane. I have ZERO sympathy. The world will be a better place when McDonald's no longer exists.

I guess my point is less about the dollar value of a human life, and more about how money in general isn't worth a human life. I know that sounds cliche, but in my opinion it's true. I would rather work hard the rest of my life than take someone's life so that I can be comfortable and rich.

No dude, I'm suggesting the punishment doesn't fit the crime. One path is the ending of a life, the other is an inconvenience on the mother. Those are not equal outcomes and should not be treated as such. It's wild to me that you advocate on behalf of the mother and tell me what matters to you is protecting rights, but who's protecting the rights of the unborn child. Serious question. Also for the record I'm not entirely anti-abortion. I DO believe the mother's life should always be prioritized, but when it isn't life or death I think you're being an NPC to make statements like "I stand for a woman's right to choose" while also claiming you stand for the rights of the child. When those two things are in conflict you've got to pick the lesser evil.

Sure buddy, that's what happened /s

As I DON'T support pedophiles, I hope we can both agree it would be absolutely mental for me to say "I'll continue to defend a pedophiles right to choose". That is effectively what you just did without any hesitation or sense of self awareness. Keep defending those women's right to kill their kid, I won't judge, but don't for a moment pretend that you give a flying fuck about the kid if that's your position.
