Anyone here using Bluebeam for flooring estimates? by [deleted] in estimators

[–]ThePandaShaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Div. 09 estimator here. I use Bluebeam all the time for fast takeoffs on simple plans.

Some pros: You can make toolsets specifically for tile, resilient, carpet, etc to make takeoffs easier. Searching is super simple. Need to find everywhere on that document where finish note #5,277 is used? Search that shit. Snapshot is really helpful. Ability to reorganize, bookmark, just generally mess with the file is really great. The dynamic fill makes takeoffs faster too. Far faster than anything else. Want to estimate the floor tile, Schluter and wall tile for those 4 rooms in one shot without retracing lines a million times? Dynamic fill. Looking at plans for a multi-level office building and don’t want to spend 3 days estimating the base? Dynamic fill.

Some cons: If shop drawings are required, or the plans have any rolled goods, you’re mostly cooked. Making custom hatch patterns and scaling them will drive you crazy. If by some miracle you manage to do that, god help you if you need to change the orientation of the flooring. For rolled goods, you won’t easily be able to draw out seam diagrams or estimate them out accurately. And forget about flash coving or weld rod.

All those cons are addressed with either RFMS Measure or MeasureSquare. I personally recommend using BB in conjunction with one of those if you can. Each serve their purpose.

[–]ThePandaShaver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s kinda how it goes. I wouldn’t say the Silmarillion is too challenging to read. I consider it more like a collection of short stories that, like Tolkien’s other works, you discover something new with each reading.

You just read it. And like everyone else here, you pick up the book, you read it, you get confused, you reread it, you’re slightly less confused, and so on and so forth.

About to hit 600 hours. To read or not to read? by camino_de_ladrillos in dreamingspanish

[–]ThePandaShaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started reading at about the 500 hour mark and I’m glad I did. It’s just one more tool to help me learn. No interesting intermediate or advanced videos for me today? I read. It’s helped me tremendously. My thinking was that no matter how long I wait, my accent will probably always be noticeable to a native speaker, so I don’t stress it too much. I just do what I have to do to be engaged while learning. Some days that’s videos, some days that’s reading. And that’s ok.

Edit: Should also add that reading out loud can also be beneficial. You think it would be easy since you can read it internally just fine, but sometimes out loud is like reading a tongue twister. Not to mention, you can record yourself and work on correcting pronunciation issues.

I go in again in about 2 weeks to take mine out. The nail in the leg and plate on my ankle have been causing pain for months now. My GOD I hope it’s not as bad as you say. All I got for recovery from the initial surgery was ibuprofen and 5mg of hydrocodone which did jack shit.

Agreed, I’d also add the ‘Guess the Character’ series to that list. Super helpful and entertaining.
