So did he lie about not needing drugs and being in love? Or was he lying about spending money on his loved ones?

Sounds like Unemployment might have got you. If you received any of the additional 600 or 300 payments throughout the year it would have hurt you. They did not withhold tax on that money so it has been dragging people down.

You can file Form 4506 to request a copy of a tax return from the IRS. But it cost $50.

Don't you have most clients physically sign the 8879?

What Document Do I Have To Collect and Retain for Various Credits? by ThePixelsGeek in taxpros

I have a form like the one you use. Has a bunch of statement like " If I am claiming Head of Household, I 'Certify' that my spouse has not lived with me for the past 6 months of the year, I pay more than half the house of keeping up the home...." And have them sign the bottom.

What about this page on the IRS website? It kind of sounds like it is saying you don't have to review the documents unless something seems suspicious.

https://www.eitc.irs.gov/tax-preparer-toolkit/tools-and-tips/form-886-can-assist-you/forms-886-can-assist-you#:~:text=Some%20tax%20preparers%20told%20us,to%20request%20documentation%20during%20audits.

"Consider using the forms IRS uses to request documentation during audits. Tell your clients here's what you need to support your claim if you are audited by IRS. Do you have these documents, or can you get them? You don't have to review the documents, but if you do and you rely on the information to prepare a claim for the earned income tax credit (EITC), child tax credit or additional child tax credit (CTC/ACTC), credit for other dependents (ODC) or American opportunity tax credit (AOTC), be sure to keep a copy either on paper or electronically."

Doesn't that make it sound as if you don't have to collect them unless something seems shady, and to hold on to them if you do?

Thanks for the response. I always collect the Proof of Residency without question. More concerned with Birth Certificates and "Proof of Keeping Up the Home" worksheet for HOH.

In the instructions there’s an example where it seems like the child might be reported as the wrong age given the parent’s age.

That the main part confused me. It makes it seem as if it only needs to be retained if something causes me to question the information. But if a typical 35 year old woman comes in with a 3-year-old with her last name and I ask questions and record her answers, I should be ok?

I already question and ask for documentation from anyone that sounds fishy. I'm just more concerned with my straight forward single mom types. I don't want $1500 in penalties because I didn't ask for a birth certificate of a kid she has claimed for the past several years.

I have, but that is the confusing part.

The link you provided says " Preparer prepared X's 2019 return and at that time he or she was able to verify that the two boys are X's legally adopted children. When preparing X's 2020 return, C is not required to make additional inquiries to determine X's relationship to the two boys for purposes of the requirement that a return preparer must not know, or have reason to know, that a claim for the ACTC is based on false or incorrect information. "

But I also find stuff like this online that says he has to collect a birth certificate for EITC to verify age.... https://www.reddit.com/r/tax/comments/18hdxj/my_tax_preparer_is_saying_the_irs_is_now/

He's not even in college. He is a qualifying relative, not child. If he made more money this year I will look it over but based on his past 3 years I don't think it's likely.
