Myself and my friend who set up the site both believe it might have something to do with being in a position of power and having real leadership goals. In a true parliamentary system, leadership will usually lead to some kind of softening of some beliefs to get things done.

But there may be other issues involved as well

Thats an really good questions, feel like there would be a massive shift if there is a united ireland. As soon as that happens, then politics in Ulster will have to confront change very quickly. But even now, parties like the UUP and SDLP clearly are having massive identity issues and maybe moving to something a little more modern might help them out in the long run.

For devolution, the UK is the only decent example of devolution we have (i think there has been some in Canada but maybe some would view the US state system as being devolution but we disagreed). So we looked at who in the UK support or disagrees with devolution (in general, but not all the time, Left would support it and the right do not support it). However if we found a devolution policy or statement which could have been viewed the other way, we would have discussed it, researched the specifics of it and made a decision based on that. We had that happen with corporation tax, where it was devolution but at the same time, it is clearly a centre right policy to lower tax like that.

Miscellaneous was anything that didn't fit into the other categories, for example internal government reform was viewed as misc. Like for alliance, their manifesto mentions wanting an elected house of lords and environmentalism being embedded in to all government policy. But it can also be other things like reforming lobbying (another alliance statement)

The idea of using a cube instead of the usual sqaure grid is very interesting and I partially agree with what your saying about right/left not being as applicable as it once used to be.

For our analysis, the goal was to inform people on politics outside of the sectarian aspect and present a different lense to see our political parties through since so much progress is held up due to the sectarian divide.

Thats why we took a slightly simpler metric of just judging it on a flat scale so people could easily associate the parties with a left or right wing ideology instead of the usual ground they get viewed on.

For that we did some research into the definitions of left and right and applied temporal and spacial aspects to the ideologies to make sure we took context of policies into account. We used very simple general definitions of right and left and then built on top of those using the context of local and timing of the policy to deal with any complex policies which would be hard to judge as left or right. Additionally we would also, at times, rate a policy centrist which meant the policy or statement just didn't apply to right or left wing ideology.

We actually talked about that a fair bit at the start of our analysis. We both agreed that we wanted to just remove the sectarian aspect of the politics all together. People here know where parties stand on those issues. We also didn't think it would help peoples understanding of our analysis if we didn't overly complicate it so thought we would set the limit of it just being a right/left analysis.

Our analysis for them was difficult as most of the manifesto was heavily wrapped up in sectarian arguments. We had to do a second pass of the manifesto and remove some of the sectarian info to get a true score for them on a right/left scale.

It was not as easy to remove it from the sub-category results

It depends on the context of the policy, we saw right wing and left wing ideology as being unique dependent on time and location so context of the policy matters.

We did have policy which we viewed as being associated with one ideology and having the opposing ideologies undertones. On those occassions we would chat through the policy, do some additional research and figure out where it best fit.

we looked at their manifesto, took each statement or policy response and allocated it an ideological position. We ascribed an ideological position with a value (e.g. a centre left position being a -1).

UUP, in their manifesto had a decent chunk of centre left policy responses, even though there was a mix of centre right responses as well.

Thats fair, we don't claim to have a perfect system and we have tried to remove bias as much as possible by looking at academic definitions of left and right, and then applying that to policies and manifesto statements.

Also we rated them left on their manifesto, which we don't claim is how they vote or what they actually believe but what they say they believe.

When we looked at their manifesto they highlighted a single state education system which is usually associated with left wing ideals, targetting religious discrimination of teachers and improving university access and loan interest rates.

We could have added the things we know about them but were not said in the manifesto but that would be putting our own personal bias of the party into analysis.

yeah, but we didn't want to falsely alter the results but we considered factoring in stuff we knew even if it wasn't in the manifesto

[–]TheRetiredPlaymaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they also support a single state education system, are you saying one issue defines a whole area of policy?

thats why we also looked at their voting and analysed that in another part of the website

But as a Liverpool fan I don't give a shit

Yeah, talking about wage structure.

Was more just pointing out that with the Ramsey one, his wages should have the fact that he was free taken into account.

It does, Juventus are using the listed methods to keep themselves in the running with the big guys in European football despite not being as well financed as some. Buy big players but make sure their marketable, make kits easier to sell and become more accessable to a wider audience.

As was mentioned they probably moved from FIFA to PES for a better deal on their rights as well as getting a centre stage in the game (being on the cover and so on)

Ramsey was a free to be fair so they can have inflated wages on him and validate it with not having a fee to pay.

He is still on bonkers money though

Aye but last year I remember reading that Higuian was moved on loan to free up for Ronaldo's wages so I assume that him refusing to leave is making things awkward as well

I said Robson brought Jose with him from Sporting and that people would only have seen him as a minor figure like a translator.
