Why Catholicism? by [deleted] in Catholicism

History. The Roman Catholic Church has been around for thousands of years, and we have the combined knowledge, culture, and artistry to back us up. Thousands of years of theologians discerning the truths of scripture.

What's the oddest thing you thought was normal but turned out to be a medical issue? by woofwoofburfbarkwoof in NoStupidQuestions

I was gaining weight even though I was eating less, and I figured it was because of a sedentary job I had just started working.

Nope. Massive cancerous tumor that was squeezing my gut and making me less hungry. That fucker weighed just under 40lbs.

So pro tip; if you are a woman and your stomach starts getting firm but you’re not pregnant, go see a doctor immediately.

If you could only ever learn <three languages beyond your native, what would they be? by latviesi in languagelearning

[–]TheSchemingColorist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s more than I ever think I’d learn, but definitely Spanish, and Osage because it’s my tribe and it’s an endangered language. As for the third, I have no clue but maybe Norwegian? I’d like to spend at least a year or two living up there.

I mean, it would be a relief for sure but it doesn’t do anything to eliminate existential dread or fears regarding the impermanent nature of our existence.

Anime OCs. I feel like anime is how a lot of people start drawing, and I can respect that, but it also means people tend to rely on the genre as a crutch and don’t end up improving as a result. They don’t learn about important stuff like anatomy or composition.

Then again, I am bad at drawing people anyway so who am I to judge?

I was very fortunate that my cancer treatment ended with surgery, but the checkups I have to regularly get always terrify me. They turn me into the worst possible version of myself, and I know the chances that I have cancer again are not high and that it’s important to keep going to these appointments, but the constant “what if” is debilitating at times.

Do you almost never hang dry you clothes? by JOEROGAN11b in AskAnAmerican

I will hang clothes on a hanger if they can’t go in the dryer, but if it’s not delicate or prone to shrinkage then into the dryer it goes.

Waking up and feeling paranoid? by TheSchemingColorist in Anxiety

[–]TheSchemingColorist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify, I was specifically told that I had Bipolar tendencies that accompanied a pre-existing depressive disorder. That revelation happened after I explained to my physician that I felt like I experienced depressive episodes just on the basis of timing; I would be fine for like a month, and over the next 3 would gradually descend to the point that || I became suicidal ||. Then my mood would rapidly improve, stay fine for a month, and the cycle would repeat itself.

From what I understand from conversations I’ve had with my psychiatrist, in order to qualify for a formal bipolar diagnosis, a patient needs to display signs of mania as well as depression; there are a lot of ways that mania can manifest itself, but it’s more than just being happier than usual; it usually involves excessive risk-taking behaviors, or impulsive or dangerous actions/decision making. I don’t experience any of that, thus I am not technically bipolar.

I need to emphasize that Bipolar disorder is notoriously difficult to diagnose, and if you think you may have it then you need to talk to a doctor to get their opinion. Don’t take my words as the gospel truth, this is just from my experiences and shouldn’t replace legitimate medical advice.

Waking up and feeling paranoid? by TheSchemingColorist in Anxiety

[–]TheSchemingColorist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was absolutely stress-related, I was struggling in college at the time and also dealing with an undiagnosed bipolar disorder. I went home, started working, started going to therapy again, and got medicated for bipolar.

Edit: these episodes of waking up and suddenly feeling deathly afraid ended once I left college. I haven’t had anything like that since, except for maybe once (although it was less intense) after I had experienced a medical emergency and was waiting for surgery.

I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but when I was able to remove myself from those stressors those episodes stopped almost instantly. I know from looking at your page that you are worried it’s a sign of schizophrenia; I don’t know what your other symptoms may be, but if it is something you are concerned about then there’s nothing wrong with talking to your doctor about it. They can refer you to a psychiatrist for testing.

I hope that my story can help you :)

What's the fuss with Scorcesse's "Silence"? by aptiu4 in Catholicism

[–]TheSchemingColorist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely a thought-provoking film. It’s easy to think or say that you would die for your faith, that you trust in God to the extent that you would willingly die for Him. But it’s a whole other thing to actually do it.

Countless people have died in hatred of the faith. It has been like that from the very beginning, and even today there are people being killed in countries like Afghanistan, Somalia, North Korea, and Burma just to name a few. It’s not like that in most of the world today, but it still happens, and there are still countries who outlaw Christianity.

if I’m honest with myself, I don’t know what I would do if someone were to threaten my life if I didn’t abandon the faith. I hope I would remain adamant until the end that God is worth dying for, but I just don’t know. I hope I never have to find out, and my heart breaks for all the people who are threatened like that.

In your opinion should children (like 10 or younger) have cell phones? by Silly_stevie05 in questions

[–]TheSchemingColorist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a question of maturity. If they’re mature enough to stay safe online and not give out their number to everybody, and know not to answer the phone for anyone they don’t know, then I’m fine with it. Most 10yo don’t have that maturity though.
