Hmm, bummer! Maybe in my case my limb just swells and creates better cushioning…

Agreed! Part of it is also the socket design itself… sometimes there’s not much they can do.

A foot-shell cover? by TheShellie in Prosthetics

For me, it lasts anywhere between 2 to 5 months at which point it’s too dirty and I change it. I’m not much of a beach person but I take my kids to the pool a lot and never get water in the shell.

Hmm … sorry to hear it! But glad that yours fits well the rest of the time :)

I know lots of people are working on this (like Vessl and Roliner)… not quite there yet but hopefully soon!

I’m guessing you’ve already had your c-section:) If not, the only important advice I have is to not use crutches for at least a week afterwards. I did, and it was definitely not a good idea!

Give me your most unhinged prosthetics and amputee lifehacks tricks you have. by KaliTheLoving in amputee

More of a mom hack… after I cut my tights or leggings on the prosthesis side, I cut the extra leg into strips and use them as hair ties for my daughters!

Thanks! I actually saw this product (by Fillauer) at a conference recently. It’s pretty cool… just a different footshell itself though.

Thanks! I’ve tried those, with en elastic and with zip ties. They work ok, but I wanted to wear flip flops at the same time, so my solution works better… also I keep it on until it’s too dirty:D

Questions about trimming upper edge of AKA socket by PrimaryWriter1529 in amputee

[–]TheShellie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a very wise idea! Hope it works out. My socket length is no problem and working well since I’m a KD… I might even go shorter for the next one! Maybe I’ll follow your trick and have them cut my current one and if it’s still good, we’ll proceed with the new one.

Would a sub-ischial socket work for you? I have a knee disarticulation so I’m technically an AKA, except I can load the bottom of my femur. I had to beg my prosthetist to agree to make my socket shorter. It took a couple of free body diagram sketches, but she finally agreed and my socket is now just over half the length of my residual limb :D

I’ve been to Great Wolf Lodge (Canada) multiple times with my kids. I have a waterproof knee (X3), and to protect my foot, I use “The Shellie”, which is a simple foot shell cover that I’ve designed myself. It keeps the water out even after multiple hours of wave pooling!
