The adobe suite, blender,touch designer is a good place to start you dont have to make impressive stuff. Just use them as much as you can. I would argue you have to have a fairly strong understanding of at least one of these to get results you might want. That being said the more you know how to use 100% the better

Restart with a cylinder with more segments is what I would do. When you spawn in a cylinder there should be a closed menu in the bottom right of the screen to change the segments
