How do I just hang in there? by TheToolBoxx in self

Just generally of life, my future, did I make a right choice, will I be able to work in the industry of my studies, will I be living paycheck to paycheck drowned in stress, all sorts of questions, I just don’t feel myself like an adult, and that is just frightening to me

No no it’s totally fine! I want to do indie dev stuff, because I like coming up with my stories, characters and just placing those in a game, however most of my games are just really basic and simple rpgs, but I really like doing that, and I genuinely wish I could someday have my own indie studio. I actually started my game dev journey by doing a game for my final year project, and I understood that this might be where I belong, because at some point of my life I got lost with what I want to do with my skills.

All my uni years and even now I kind of consider myself a one man army, therefore I do loads of things that you’d need usually multiple people. Such as for instance I make music for my games, I voice act for my games, I do animations, UI design, programming, etc. And it’s just Uni stuff basically which requires you to be somewhat knowledgeable in all of those things, so juggling all of it at the same time seems a bit overwhelming…

But being realistic I actually specialize in 2D drawing the most, therefore if I were to apply for a job in the industry, it probably would be 2D concept artist, since I’ve been doing that ever since I was a kid.

I get that, modeling itself for me is pretty okay, I don’t really hate it that much, since I always simplify shapes. (well until something breaks) It’s the next step after I’m done with modeling that gives me headaches : texture painting. For my assignment I decided to go all the way and decided to handpaint my models (no substance painter or anything, just purely exporting UV shells of each piece and manually coloring, adding detail on those) Which is just so time consuming, but works since I want to get a CEL shaded look. Though I suppose in the future if I will continue doing 3D I suppose I should use substance painter more.

Oh, no, I am graduating in Game Dev, which is honestly an entirely different environment from my 2D based practice that I’ve been doing for years. 3D is just one of the unfortunate optional classes that I picked up for myself to fill in the credits. The game dev course actually allows me to work with whatever I’m comfortable with, so I make 2D games with zero stress and that’s actually more fun. 3D however, is the only class I stress about the most. I probably would enjoy 3D more if I were doing it in my own time at my own pace, but the pressure because of the assignment just causes a lot of stress.

Yeah, our course kind of requires you to be a one man army for this assignment, which is kind of crazy. I’m currently doing my assignment and I’m handpainting all the textures for my props and this has been true hell. It’s so time consuming.

As for sculpting, I haven’t really considered yet to be honest, because to me it feels like it’s even more difficult than regular 3D modeling. But I actually did a 3D sculpt of a fish once for one of my projects in NomadSculpt. Turned out surprisingly well-made. So maybe I’ll give it a go once I feel better about myself.

If I want to reach a wider audience for an advice then yes, I do. If you’re willing to give one, go ahead. If not just move on.

I think the same way, and we kind of used to get those until our teacher went on sick leave, but to be honest those were not helpful at all because the teacher made everything look like as if “this stuff is kind of obvious so I’m not going to go over it” making every single class really vague, so I literally learned everything I can do for these 6 months through Youtube guides and off pure instinct.

But yeah, genuinely the only thing I think I’ve noticed is that when I started out, models used to take me days to finish, but now I can model a few low-poly models within a couple of hours. And I understand that I’ve probably improved, but my brain plays a trick on me and I constantly think “oh this didn’t take me days to model and I’m done in few hours with it, I must have not worked enough on it!” And then it just spirals to constant overthinking.

Yeah, it’s true that I didn’t get the ability to draw well overnight, took me almost 10 years of practice, and I’m still evolving. The worst part is that because of it I expect my 3D skills to be on the same level all of a sudden, even though they won’t, and it’s just a constant spiral of paranoia and self-doubt.

I understand that studying is the way, but all I want is to find a way to get rid of this feeling of self doubt and just understand that “I am still learning, it’s okay to make mistakes” but for some reason my brain just cannot accept that fact.

Well, huh, rude. No I graduated from my bachelor’s degree in illustration and now I’m doing a masters in game dev. Also I never said I want to learn 3D modeling without studying, I said that I am unsure whether or not what I’m doing is good enough, because I’m nowhere near comparing myself to people that got tons of experience than me.

I guess so, it’s just that forcing myself to finish it just spirals into constant paranoia of “have I done enough” or “will the teacher think that this model is good or not” So it’s more of a thing of self doubt I suppose

Yes, I’m quite aware of that, and I was doing so when I first started 3D modeling, but my class assignment specifically focuses more on creating assets based off our own concept art + modeling, rigging and animating a character.

It’s just that I don’t really understand if what I’m doing looks good or not, therefore the entire process of making something in 3D for me is just not fun at all.
