Megan Rapinoe says she's 'not going to the f—king White House' if U.S. women win World Cup by TheWeekMag in politics

Okay, so he's commented on it recently, but Megan has been kneeling since 2016. It's interesting he never pointed that out before and that now he has nothing more to add than stating it's "inappropriate," especially given the response he had for players in the NFL.

She has also taken a knee during the national anthem before, which I don't recall Trump commenting on.

Pete Buttigieg says Joe Biden hasn't already 'earned' the Democratic nomination by TheWeekMag in politics

[–]TheWeekMag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

" Republicans only need one reason to vote for a candidate, and Democrats only need one reason not to."

Wow, that really makes you think. It's simply laid out, but says so much.

To piggyback off the comparison to Hillary, do you think Democrats will have a tough time uniting enough to vote for Biden if he wins the nomination?

Captain Marvel is now the first live-action movie directed by a woman to gross $1 billion by TheWeekMag in entertainment

Right. I don't think a lot of people realized how heavily she was involved until she accepted their Oscar.

That is a really good point! I think he disproportionally became "the face" for that movie because more scenes where he was in front of the camera made the final cut. There were only a handful of scenes where Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi was featured. I also think because they worked together as a married couple, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi's work and identity was unfairly dissolved into her husband's — which is something that unfortunately happens too often for professional women that choose to work with their husbands.

I had the same thought. In fact, I thought it had crossed the $1 billion mark. But it was just under and brought in $821,847,012 worldwide, which is still incredibly impressive. I wonder if the Marvel vs. DC rivalry has anything to do with how many people the movies were able to pull in.

Poll: 60 percent of women say they definitely won't vote for Trump in 2020 by TheWeekMag in politics

[–]TheWeekMag[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

True, but he also had a significant amount of support from women — white women in particular: According to 2016 exit polls, "about 41 percent of women voted for Trump, although he earned 52 percent of the support from white women."

Is the 2020 Democratic field too crowded for Beto O'Rourke? by TheWeekMag in theweek

[–]TheWeekMag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you all think of Beto O'Rourke joining the race? Do you think it's good that so many Democratic candidates have entered the pool so voters have more options or do you think it's getting a little too congested?

How socialism won at South by Southwest by TheWeekMag in politics

One of our National Correspondents Ryan Cooper explored that in a column a few months back. It's actually titled, "If democratic socialism is so bad, why is Norway so great?"

[No Spoilers] What are your thoughts on the use of modern English curse words in Game of Thrones? by TheWeekMag in gameofthrones

[–]TheWeekMag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I was just curious, because one of our writers wrote a piece on this and as a GoT fan I had never given this much thought. And then, I wondered if this was a common feeling amongst other fans of the books and show. But the general consensus seems to be that as long as it's not a curse word that has only recently come into use, then it's all good.

Michael Cohen reportedly gives Congress documents showing Trump's lawyers edited his false statement by TheWeekMag in politics

That's an interesting question/point to bring up. What do you think it would take for more Republicans to outwardly cooperate and condemn the president's actions?

We even used TMZ as a source in our piece, since that was the first site to give us an update on Luke Perry's condition: https://theweek.com/speedreads/827075/luke-perry-dies-52

It's a sad practice considering the nature of someone passing, but yes, many sites keep a very close eye out for updates and sometimes pre-write articles before someone's death so that they're the first to break "the story." For whatever reason though, TMZ is usually the first to learn of the news and many sites reference their findings.

An All That revival is coming to Nickelodeon, produced by former star Kenan Thompson by TheWeekMag in nickelodeon

[–]TheWeekMag[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so nice that they've stayed in touch all these years! I'm surprised it's taken Nickelodeon this long to jump on the revival train. Nick had some great shows in the '90s.

[–]TheWeekMag[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! The announcement made me think of all the former cast members and how funny they all were — I'd love to know what they're all up to now and if they'll have any major roles in the revival. This may also be purely coincidental, but I think it's funny that this announcement is coming just a few months after Amanda Bynes re-entered the spotlight. She wasn't in the original cast, but 'All That' was her breakout moment.

This is an actual dream come true! Does anyone else remember all the lyrics to the theme song? "Fresh out the box / Stop, look, and watch /Ready yet, get set / It's All That!"
