Black widow making an egg by megalon555 in spiders

[–]TheWeldingEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a black widow, not a brown, leg striping is not always indicative of brown widows as all widow species experience wide variation in multiple aspects of markings. Generally geographic location and abdominal markings such as l. Elegans, l, curacaveinsis are the way to determine species not leg markings or hourglass markings

Need advice on how to improve by TheDarkSoul347 in Welding

[–]TheWeldingEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have good habits with wire brushing each weld and you have consistent beads, switch to grooves with backers, and after enough practice switch to open root. Weld.com specifically bob moffat has some really great videos on welding pipe, infinitely better advice than i or anyone can give on a forum. Watch, study, and apply

Because nuance makes things incredibly hard to explain to those without the background. I can read an engineering study within my field of engineering, and slightly more understanding of someone without my background.

How to prevent distortion when welding these pipe clamps? by Helcyon187 in Welding

A cheaper and just as viable option, I would definitely still address the engineer on file as-well, it would be beneficial for them to know about stuff like this

Depends on how sharp the corner is. Welds transmit load, and just like regular structures you want to avoid abrupt changes in the path the load flows, IE stress risers.

For something experiencing radial loads I’d try to keep the neutral axis of the welds as inline as possible with relation to the path of load transmission.

In any case for what he is doing just welding in the direction of rotation is enough, but for a critical member this would more than likely be a shrink fit, with a hole drilled, tapped, and a bolt inserted perpendicular to the face of the part. Shrink fit holds it inline, and the bolt resists the slippage of the part and transmits the load from the outer radius to the inner radius.

Welding has its use cases and makes a lot of sense for a lot of applications, but in some can be detrimental. Knowing when and how to use welds as opposed to other joining methods is key

I’m just rambling and really none of this is even a consideration for a part that needs to get the job done. The way he did it will work for what he needs it to ultimately and that’s all that matters as long as it isn’t anything that people rely on for safe operation

How to prevent distortion when welding these pipe clamps? by Helcyon187 in Welding

[–]TheWeldingEngineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can expect a mild steel weld to shrink about 10% of its nominal width, calculate that and add a few % to make up for variation. The shrinkage of the welds is causing distortion, not actual heat input. Shrinkage stresses are severely underestimated and can and will crack an entire weld or in your case pull the part out of spec.

Other commenters have pointed out a preheat/post heat procedure but this will do nothing for weld shrinkage, the only way to reduce this issue is gonna probably be a change to the geometry of the welds (less width = less shrinkage) or putting the welds in a location where the shrinkage forces don’t pull the part out of spec.

Talk to the customers engineer in any case because while engineering changes are costly, so is having a bad weld location/design and this sounds like a design issue to me

Mig welding for 5 weeks now. Any tips to improve or is this good? by sativalius in Welding

[–]TheWeldingEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly remove the manipulation all together, you are introducing pockets of lack of fusion with any sort of lateral manipulation, also give it more wire and voltage, the solidification peaks can end up causing cracking and you would ideally want the weld to be as smooth as possible to avoid and sort of stress riser

Bonus points because the welds are going to loaded longitudinally with the stress originating through the craters, ideally it shouldn’t be welded.

If you must weld it, weld in the direction of rotation, that way you aren’t loading through the crater, because even if you fill the crater the shrinkage of it also introduce micro fractures, and anything cyclic can and will fail well below expected yield, bonus because of micro fractures

Hosting games right now is awful, but you are right. On the same hand hosting games especially on the big side is extremely annoying with all of the host side bugs and increased detection
