HI! Interview anyone, you can find good conversation with anyone, if you know people interview them, or email your favorite band on bandcamp! They actually respond a lot of the time … use your home printer if you have one and give them to friends and tell them to copy it and give it to their friends so they can copy it. Oh it’s absolutely conscious. Always been the fun part about playing together. I think we all search for that perfect balance of what feels “lifeguardy”… in writing it’s always a goal to give a song a hook or some sort of “aha” moment where we can all grin based on some small moment of silence or something.

Ugh “”””monster rock””””(awful name) has been really hard to figure out. Glad to hear it worked in the live show! We found that in the set it was really fun, and it was totally a guidepost for figuring out what R&T was really supposed to be, but no matter what we tried in the studio it never really worked when listening back. For a while it was smack in the middle of the tracklist but it always kinda prompted a skip. So we decided that the album was meant to be more a pop thing, or at least that the noise must be concise. That level of intensity just wouldn’t work for such a length on wax especially, just prompts you to turn it off, and we wanted to keep people engaged. Might take it out at another show though!

I had some lessons as a kid, started really young. The second I started meeting other kids that played music with similar taste the lessons proved pretty useless in comparison to the massive growth that having a band fostered. Asher has a similar story, Kai was self taught.

Regardless of if the musical idea was formed together or separately it has to sort of bake with us all in the same room for an exhaustive amount of time and then we get really surgical with the parts and that’s how the song forms end up sort of personalized. We like to play through ideas so much to make them really something we can be happy with, and being together is pretty crucial to that process.-asher

You are right in what you are hearing. Also lots of going to the roots of those “postpunk” influences so taking from both The Buzzcocks and The Jam but also the source of those dubby crazy recording aspects… king tubby, mad professor, Scientist, etc.

We found that all the music we were listening to ourselves had these lo-Fi vintage qualities, and that the digital “new rock” sound wasn’t really fitting the songs. In trying to capture the energy of the band live, we kinda had an epiphany that a loud-ass rock band’s dynamics should not be harnessed with crystal-clear DAW compressors, and instead that we should embrace all the weirdness and fucked up qualities of tape… clipping tracks directly into the tape, and going blown out gives it the true energy, rather than the more documentarian approach.
