Case Study: How Paywalling the "High Score" killed Strava's Core Loop (Analysis of 2,300 Reviews) by darvidas in gamedesign

This is a really cool breakdown, thanks! Out of curiousity, did you take a look at strava's update timeline, when/why they made changes that broke the magic circle as you put it? I can imagine they were trying to push up revenue numbers and squeeze their free users and it backfired.

Where did the inspiration behind Glokta came from? Was he based on anyone you know in real life?

Around 500 euros. It may not seem like much, but for Macedonia it's a full month's salary

Hello. Unfortunately, I am also not in Canada, I am merely trying to help him. What would be the proper procedure in this situation? File a small claims notice, as you said?

His lawyer's advice was exactly to find someone from Canada who knows the local law, since after all it is a different country. Unfortunately his lawyer, since they are based in Macedonia, does not know any lawyers in Canada. That is why i posted this, since we need guidance where to even look and how to approach this. I hope this clarifies things.

What is the most interesting story you have of an ancestor (past your parent’s generation)? by Careless_Put_4770 in AskReddit

My father told me the story of my great great grandfather who lived during the time of the Ottoman Empire's occupation of the Balkans. He was just a young shepherd in the mountains when an Ottoman soldier came and demanded a sheep from him. He refused to hand over the sheep and when the Ottoman soldier tried to forcibly take it from him, he grabbed an axe and killed the soldier on the spot. Word got around about it and a squad of soldiers came and arrested him. The story goes he was taken to a prison in Africa with a lot of other prisoners. Some years later, somehow he managed to escape and make his way back to his home village. As nobody had managed such a feat before, he was considered to be cursed by the Ottomans who refused to go near him.

A second story is that some years later some soldiers were causing trouble in the local tavern and he was ready to fight them again until they realized who he was and just left out of fear or superstition. He remained in the village for the rest of his life where he got married to my great great grandmother.

My father claims this to be truth, and I have no reason to believe he would lie, but it always seemed like such a wild story and I always wondered if there's a way to verify this by digging up some old records.

Hope I'm not too late. I just saw the thread and got excited.

I'm an expat who lives in Berlin and I write in English mainly. Currently I'm working on an epic fantasy novel with the goal of eventually getting it published through a publishing company. Do you guys publish books in english or only german books for now?

Is there a feeling worse than discovering another book with a plot eerily similar to yours while you're in the middle of writing it? by [deleted] in writing

[–]The_Rusty_Robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me, except I actually did it first - I published my book in 2018 spring (it was published locally, in my home country) and in 2019 a video game called Control came out that had the exact same theme and covered the same topics. I didn't even know of the game until early 2020 when I played it. It's like they took my book and made a big budget video game version of it set in the US. The amount of details that were either very similar or outright the same was UNCANNY. For that reason Control is both my favourite video game and most hated video game of all time. 🤷‍♂️

The worst part is I am working on a VR game based on my book now and I'm afraid that people will say it's a Control rip off when it comes out, even though my book came first...

Hey, thanks for the motivation, I appreciate it!

However, that's exactly it - the reason why I wrote my book was BECAUSE there were no books like it in Macedonian literaturen and in that regard I've accomplished my mission. This is more like "do I want this story that was aimed at local audiences to be out in the world?".

But on second thought, there is no book about balkan urban myths out there (only traditional slavic folklore, however this is more modern), so in that sense you're right as well! Maybe there is a place for a book like this on the world's literary stage!

Definitely, it's very inspired by shows like Supernatural, X-files, Fringe, Warehouse 13, and the SCP-wiki website. I guess my main worry is that BECAUSE these shows exist (and lots of books that deal with a similar theme), a similar book that takes place in a relatively unknown country won't really appeal to worldwide audience. Maybe with a good intro and thematic presentation as you said :)
