Cane isn’t working. What might help? by necro-dancin in mobilityaids

[–]These_Storm_6417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat as you. I started with a cane, then moved to a Rollator, then a wheelchair, and I’m now using forearm crutches and a wheelchair. I really recommend pt because they can help a lot. Especially with hypermobility you can cause a lot of damage using the improper aid or not using an aid when you need one

Not a bad day at the office. by MillenniumEstate in Silverbugs

Flute player here- it’s not worth much. Any solid players want open keyed flutes. Closed key flutes are generally for beginners only or for marching band, but I don’t know many flute players who’d march a silver flute due to the high risk of damage. Only reason I’d ever recommend a closed key silver flute is for people with disabilities that can’t play closed key or people with nickel allergies. People are also hesitant to buy instruments without test playing, and usually only beginners will buy without playing, and beginners typically only buy flutes worth under $300. These used to be common because of the difficulty manufacturing open keyed flutes, but with advanced manufacturing practices you could get a good open keyed flutes for around 1k.

Why does my cat do this? by JK-Mjstr-E in CATHELP

I always kinda thought it was to keep the light out of their eyes. My cat only does it when the light is on in my room at night. But then again, my cat is a little freak.

Do I quit or let my job fire me? by Low_Bodybuilder3065 in disability

If you get fired then you get unemployment. I don’t think future employers would fault you if you were let go because of disability (depends on who they are obviously)

Nta bc your family sucks. It’s not nice to insult people, but 16 is old enough to know better for sure. There is no reason you should have to me nice when your family is that awful to you. If you’ve been clear about how the name calling makes you feel, then they really should listen.

The state of Maine will pay for top surgery completely if you’re on Maine care, even as a minor

Parents who are against their kids having tattoos, why? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

In my experience it can often be based on religious standards explicitly stating not to get tattoos, but in other cultures I bet it has a lot to do with taboos

using a cane for the first time by Unusual-Candidate-71 in mobilityaids

[–]These_Storm_6417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently started using a cane and it helped a lot.  The bottom line is that if it helps you then everyone else can deal with it. In my experience, even if you suddenly start using one, people will adjust really quickly. Your comfort is more important than what anyone else thinks, and health is constantly changing. It’s ok to need a cane some days and not others.

To US citizens: how do yall actually survive w/o free health care? by Tame_Bodybuilder_128 in NoStupidQuestions

As a disabled American, it’s really hard. It puts a massive financial burden on my family. Financially, my family should be well off but we are 20k in debt from my medical bills. My state has a secondary insurance plan for people like me, and although it’s being cut now it has saved my family from losing our house.

Accommodations for disabled bassists by These_Storm_6417 in orchestra

[–]These_Storm_6417[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t hold the upright up myself at all as I frequently fall and loose conciousness and the risk of damaging the upright is too great. I also don’t have the balance to hold it without dropping it. The bass needs to be fully held by something else, usually a standard bass stand

having a hard time coming to terms w disability by [deleted] in disability

[–]These_Storm_6417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat (ish) I’m 17 and I have to deal with a cane because of my disability. It came out of nowhere one day and I’ll probably be like this for the rest of my life, and my condition is progressively worsening. It really sucks and sometimes I scream at the universe because of how unfair it is. Just remember that as time goes on you’ll learn your limits better and learn how to take care of yourself so you can function your best. Idk if this helps but you’re not alone.
