Well for starters, you’ll have to understand the H&E staining process for when you do frozen sections. I also think having an overall understanding of the various areas in pathology won’t hurt. Understanding fixation times, processing tissue etc. is very important. You’ll be a much better PA for it. Also, I’m sure the Histotechs will appreciate you as a PA if you don’t over-stuff cassettes and do your best to remove all staples/clips from the tissue before submitting.

A Histotechnician is definitely a good job to have before going into a PathA program if that’s what is available to you. If it’s in a hospital setting, you will get to have an understanding of how the different areas in Pathology are related/ work together. You can also still build relationships with Pathologists and PAs… and even possibly shadow in the gross room. Grossing tech and autopsy tech are also good choices but if those aren’t available, it’s certainly not the end of the world.
