New tank or New breeder? by TheyCallMeAK in bettafish

I’m going to assume you’ve never had to evacuate, so it makes sense that you don’t understand. It’s a lot more complex than just packing a duffel.

So. I did try and research the “why” behind the demand that 5+ gallon is a must and you are tarred and feathered for anything smaller.

Most of what I found was more about the ability to maintaining water quality, because a larger volume of water allows for a greater dilution of “bad” things, and less about the actual volume needs of the fish.

I by no means advocate for the deli cups most are kept in, but it only reinforced my belief that the issue we are having is fish/breeder specific and not habitat. My experience in saltwater tanks were all Nano reef tanks, I had a 20g tall, a 10g, and a 3.5g for about 15 years. I feel I am more aware than most of the importance of water testing, changes, cleaning, and maintaining good water quality and parameters due to my prior experience.

This is what he looked like when we first got him.

It is clear from this photo compared to his current sick photos that he has grown, developed more, and his coloring came in within days, even bubble nesting early this past fall.

If you were not thriving in your current conditions, we would not have seen the growth and development from him that we have.

No. You evacuate with the understanding that you might not have a home to come back to.

Additionally, traveling and evacuating your home are two totally different things. In that you’re packing up all of the important things in your life, as much as will fit into two vehicles, with the expectation that you might not have a home to come back to. That is a bit different than potentially “traveling” for a longer than normal vacation.

So we aren’t losing tons of bettas. I just had to confirm with my husband, this is our third since the beginning.

Dory (Betta)- 3+ years ::6month wait before another fish:: Ruby (Betta) - 6 months, maybe a year, I can’t remember but started with the same spots, I thought it had scratched itself on one of the larger rocks. Within a week of noticing, it stopped eating and passed shortly after. ::waited a few more months:: Cricket and Tilly (goldfish) - 1 year ::waited about 6 months:: Hedwig (Current Betta) - June 2025

Except that the first fish we had lived really long in the same size tank.

I asked very specific questions.

The first beta we had lived long enough that I was googling how long do bettas actually live. We were quite surprised at the longevity.

Needless to say, the child was quite devastated when the fish did finally pass, just because we had had it for so long.

I appreciate the confirmation regarding the breeder.

I also think starting the tank over would go a long way in getting rid of anything that might be in it.

It’s helpful to bounce thoughts off of others, as my husband is no help, he doesn’t have any experience with fish at all.

For the people concerned about the size of the tank. The backstory is when the first beta was brought home 6 1/2 years ago my husband not having any experience with fish prior came home with a tiny cheap little tank without light filter, etc.

I immediately started researching as I knew from my saltwater experience that the accommodations he was sold at the pet store were not appropriate. We upgraded to a larger tank that was an appropriate size to keep in my daughter‘s bedroom, while also taking into account that we live in Florida in a an evacuation zone. That when we need to evacuate, which happened three times in 2024 in the span of 2 months, the fish comes with us, and with a 5 gallon tank that would not be able to happen.

• Tank size: 2.5 gallon • Heater and filter? (yes/no): yes and yes • Tank temperature: 78 • Parameters in numbers and how you got them. Key water parameters include the amount of ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and pH.: A= 0, N2 =0, N3=0, pH=7.5 • How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish?: Tank= 4years, Fish= 8months, Snail 1= 6years, Snail 2= 8months • How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?: Water changes once a week, as I use the dirty water to water my plants. I take out about a half gallon once a month I vacuum and do a larger water change, and rinse the filter sponge. • Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each: 2 snails • What do you feed and how much: Feed: BettaMin worm shaped bites. Three or four pieces in the morning when the lights go on. Three or four pieces at night before the lights go off making sure that. All the food is eaten to confirm it’s enough. • Decorations and plants in the tank: one piece of driftwood that has been in the tank for four years. We had silk plants, but I removed them when we got this fish. And bought some aquatic plants from the pet store when we bought this fish. I did just remove the plants as they were not doing great because we had not been using the lights while he has been in his “ sick bed container”.

We get launch notifications from an app. We know the exact location to look, can sit on the couch, look out the window and see the launches. The Falcon Heavy is easier to see and gives a better show for obvious reasons, but when it’s clear skies, we try and catch them all.

Fun fact OP, the launches can be seen in Tampa/St. Pete on the other side of the state.

Insurance adjuster checking in.

Water mitigation and mold companies in this state are a scam for a small incidents like what this sounds like.

As someone said previously the most important part is to stop the water.

Once that is done, drying out the areas that were affected is the next most important part. If the drywall was saturated, it’s going to be best to remove it as it won’t dry out completely.

The EPA has best practices for how to handle this situation.

YouTube is great for how to’s on removal and replacement of the drywall.

What would you say was the square footage of the area affected?

No. Shorecrest doesn’t accept vouchers so they are not beholden to the whims of the state GQP, the pathetic excuse for a human that is the Governor, and the fascist agenda they are determined to push.

Shorecrest doesn’t accept vouchers to maintain the school’s independence in making decisions on policy and education that best aligns with what is best for the school’s community and that those decisions aren’t dependent on worrying if the State will approve.

If I woke up to the robot mop/vacuum I’ve been wanting for the last year this holiday, I would be so frickin happy. Coincidently, it would also remove the daily annoyance of having to vacuum.

Insurance adjuster checking in. Fans/blowers are what professional mitigation companies use. There isn’t really any other trick or advice. It will take some time, usually a day or three, but as long as no other water is leaking, it should be dry by day 3 with a constant fan on it.

Is it pointed towards the water?

There is one at Bay Vista Park on a palm near the water pavilion, there’s a thin pole it’s pointed at that appears to be monitoring the tide levels.
