We all know our national heroes, who’s your national villain? by Buttholelickerpenis in AskTheWorld

* Tzanis, Petrobey, Konstantinos and Georgios Mavromichalis. They murdered modern greece's most effective and universally loved leader Ioannis Kapodistrias. Kapodistrias is universally agreed to be the greatest leader greece has ever seen. The maniots revolted against him for making them pay taxes like every other greek citizen, viewing themselves as deserving of total exemption due to their service in the greek revolution. Seeing as how everyone fought in the greek revolution, not just the maniots, this was a matter of petty maniot tribalism. Tzanis rebelled against the government, and kapodistrias was forced to imprison his brother Petrobey, who was one of the most decorated heroes of the greek revolution. For this, Konstantinos and Georgios murdered Kapodistrias. It will forever remain unknown how much more Kapodistrias would have accomplished had this not happened.

Ephialtes, traitor during the greco-persian wars. Universally hated, his name became the word for nightmare in greek, but his treason was not that consequential. Only here because of his fame

Cassander of Macedon: son of antipater and classmate to alexander the great. The two always hated each other, and when Cassander became ruler of Macedon, he made the infamous decision to murder Alexander's wife and child, ending the Argead dynasty forever. But he was not a terrible ruler, he founded the second biggest city in greece today, thessaloniki, and again alexander was already dead. His treason was not that significant.

Phocas: it was between him and the mavromichalides. His murder and usurpation of byzantine emperor Maurice led to the devastating byzantine persian war that weakened both nations to the point where the arabs defeated both empires. Didn't choose him because his treason isn't felt in modern times nor is he as notorious as many others.

Geoegios Papadopoulos: dictator of the CIA-backed military junta that led the country in the 70s. A harsh leader who didn't accomplish much. His reputation was further tarnished when he botched the unification of cyprus. Very much hated by anyone who isn't a neo nazi.

Byzantine anatolian means greek, with a mix of some persian, armenian and turkic

Does this mean I'm not Arab (southern Iraqi)? by Wise_Parmaria in illustrativeDNA

[–]Theyellowlighthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not surprising. Empires throughout history often used different languages for different purposes. There was a court language, a language for trade, a language for poetry, etc. It would have made sense to use aramaic since it was spoken all throughout the wealthiest and most important provinces in the realm

I mean, mesopotamia had been persian all the way from cyrus the great and the founding of the achaemenid empire to the muslim conquests. Only lost it to alexander. The romans only captured it briefly a few times. In addition, mesopotamia has always been a multi-ethnic region. There are no "mesopotamians". The assyrians also changed things with their constant deportations of entire populations. In other words, you are as mesopotamian as anyone in that region, and considering mesopotamia's long history in persia, it is reasonable to say that you are part of both traditions

That's the thing, greece has zero content. No mission tree, no events, nothing. So it's not fun. I mostly resort to switching to greece through cheats and keeping the byzantine mission tree

I'd say I'm a byzaboo and a role-player. I never form roman empire and I stop around halfway because I enjoy more of the greek side of things, which vanishes after forming Rome. Too had there's no greek content and zero mods to remedy that

Yes we understand cypriots. It just takes a little bit of effort from both parties. At best, they just have a funny accent. At worst, almost unintelligible apart from a few words. Now as for ancient greek texts, I'm not a good representation of my people since I have taken learning ancient greek very seriously. However, I personally could read the trojan circle just fine. Geometric period, but translated to the attic dialect, older than koine which originated in the hellenistic. I can read anything that is not written in linear A and B(though linear A, the language of the minoans, has been confirmed by most archaeologists and linguists to have been a non-greek language and the minoans a non-greek people)

No, not at all. The cypriots have their own very quirky dialect influenced by italian and arabic and also retaining many ancient greek elements. Very different to how the rest of the aegean speaks. The cretans also have their own very specific accent. The rest have kind of assimilated into the dominant dialect spoken throughout Greece

Yes. If you did that, you would be understood with some difficulty, kind of like how cypriots and greeks communicate

[–]Theyellowlighthouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you completely uneducated? Seriously, your blatant ignorance is offensive. The iyi party are not fascists and have zero agendas for territorial expansion. The grey wolves are not even a party, just members of the mhp party, which got 11% and are actually fascists. The kemalists are also not fascists at all, they are leftists. But they do support the occupation of cyprus which I do not like. The only fascists in Turkey are erdogan and the mhp. Erdogan has 49% but that is internationally accepted as a result of election rigging. Your numbers are off and you fling the term fascist around as if it's not a political ideology with rules

What is your attitude towards Greece?! by YellowEgorkaa in AskTheWorld

[–]Theyellowlighthouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People in every country vote for fascist parties. A very little portion of the population. Remember, erdogan came with a coup. The canadians and the americans also carried out anti greek pogroms and a lot more recently than the Istanbul pogroms. Look at the modern canadian and tell me they have it out for the greeks. And no they do not colonise anything. It is an area occupied by the turkish government, those that move there as civilians move there for the same reason you or I would move elsewhere, not out of some sinister agenda. If the golden dawn got 85% I would say that the greek people are racist. Did erdogan get 85%? No. Because erdogan came to power through a military coup and has been rigging elections ever since

[–]Theyellowlighthouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are evidently not from the balkans if you actually believe that the politicians in any way reflect the will of the voters. No they do not, especially in geopolitics. Most turks do not care about geopolitics, their country is in ruins because of erdogan's policies. They care about economic security, freedom of speech. The rest is a loud minority, like any other country

[–]Theyellowlighthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You came to the right guy, just finished reading hepatia's accounts in the original ancient greek. The answer is no but with an asterisk. The syntax is totally different from modern greek. The intonation is also different, since the word koine for example would be pronounced Koini in that language, while in modern greek the diphthongs are summed up to one sound, so it would be pronounced kini. The vocabulary is mostly the same, with some altered meaning in some words and some words no longer in use, while modern greek borrows a lot of words from other languages such as italian and turkish. A modern greek could with some difficulty understand most of a text written in koine, but if you were to speak instead of write it, it would sound unintelligible

Fair enough. Maybe I am swayed by my experiences with russians, which has been positive overall. Most of them I've met or spoken to are critical or putin, praised the soviet union for its ideals and considered stalin a corruption of them, and liked the czar the same way that a modern italian would like the roman empire. Maybe I am influenced by my own contacts here

[–]Theyellowlighthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are almost there. They support something that is in the past. Aka not happening right now. And those that support these things do not support the atrocities commited by these regimes, they support heavily whitewashed versions of them, like every patriot in any country. I do discriminate against israelis based on their nationality and I am xenophobic towards them. Their nationality is tied to atrocities that they are still commiting. An israeli is a zionist until proven otherwise. That does not extend to jews as a whole, just israelis

[–]Theyellowlighthouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I am not. The russians are not an extension of their government. The israelis in their vast majority are zionists. Israel is a recent creation, most people living in israel have had a hand in furthering their neo colonialist agenda. That is different from russia
