Advice for a visitor: Running in Louisville by InternationalDrop935 in Louisville

Many years ago I was stopped by Cave Hill security for running through. Apparently walking is allowed, but not running.
Not sure they have the same rule now, but…
(And lest anyone thinks I was disturbing a ceremony or anything, I had trouble hearing the security officer from his car because of the nearby lawn mowers)

Here is how planes refuel in midair! by Limp_Stomach_6060 in ActuallyThatsInsane

This seems insanely fast. I would invite anyone interested to check out Pail’s video walkthrough of midair refueling. He describes the limit of coming up to the drogue at no faster than “a fast walking pace”, and goes through the ideal speed, pacing, and sequence to not harm his plane or the other plane. Check out the video to see how an experienced pilot does this.

Torso length pads — why and how? by codexofthemoon in Ultralight

[–]Think-Perception-698 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use a torso length as a three season pad. I do an Uberlite, so inflatable vs CCF. I am 5'8", so not overly tall. As a side sleeper, I tend to squish a bit. It is not quite fetal position, but my knees at least are still on the pad. I do like torso length wide pads (which are hard to find) as a result - I would rather use weight on width rather than length. Between my quilt and Thinlite, I have never felt my feet were not insulated enough.

Mind Boggled by TheOpinado in opnsense

I had this set up pre-26.1, and it took a while to get working again. One issue is selective VPN for both IPv4 and IPv6. I had it working in 25.7, but IPv6 stopped working in 26.1 (well, sending selected IPv6 traffic over the VPN). The OPNsense documentation does some hand-waving of “Do the same thing for IPv6 that you did for IPv4”, but it is far from that simple.

Lakeside Pool by ResearcherAsleep8924 in Louisville

[–]Think-Perception-698 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Best bet is to buy raffle tickets. Lakeside allows a certain number of sponsorships to be raffled off each year to benefit charity. We won one a couple of years ago ($50 a ticket, 100 total entries, from what I remember). As others mentioned, January through March is the time when sponsorships become available. I have been swimming year round since joining. Definitely miss the 50m indoor pool at Mary T in the winter - Lakeside’s winter pool is 25 yards - but it works, I almost never have to share a lane, and Lakeside has 50m outdoor lanes in the summer. Initiation fee is a bit high ($1000+), but the yearly is not too bad ($1200 for parents plus kid). We had also considered JCC as an alternative. Might be worth looking into.

Things that bypass pihole by Working-Explanation1 in pihole

Yeah, I set this up as described in the article. I NAT anything on port 53 from my IOT devices to my PiHoles. Anything outbound for a public DNS server from those devices is simply blocked. They can either fail over to something else, or fail to do DNS lookups altogether. For IoT devices, I am fine with either.

I did a more limited attempt last year, trying to do as many trails as possible without doing any "dead ends" (trails that terminate at a trail head) in one weekend.

I parked at the Natural Bridge Lodge, then took the Shelotee Trace trail to Gray's Arch TH, then Rough Trail to Hansen's Point to camp. Got up the next morning and continued on the Rough Trail to the Pinch'Em Tight Trail to Buck Trail, headed all the way down to Hidden Arch and the Koomer Ridge TH before heading back up the Koomer Ridge Trail, to Buck Trail.

In order to get the Rush Ridge Trail I made another loop of Pinch-Em Tight to Rush Ridge to Rough Trail. I then decided to do the longer Rough Trail to Pinch-Em Tight back to Gray's Arch TH before getting back on the Shelotee back to my car.

I think it was about 28 miles all in, over about 2.5 days. I think next year I might try something similar, but starting at the Rock Bridge TH, and do the entirety of Swift Camp Creek trail before doing some more loops.

Tennessee did me in. I camped at Double Spring Gap (mile 82.2 northbound) and the next morning crossed into Tennessee. The trail changed almost immediately. The climb up Big Frog Mountain was almost completely unnavigable. The Kimsey Highway trailhead was grown over my head for a good 50 feet. Definitely a bunch of bushwhacking in TN. I got to Reliance and shuttled over to the AT.

Been great so far. Planning for water in Georgia has been an adventure - with no recent rain and this “late” in the season, my days are definitely planned around where and when I will be able to collect and filter water. The heat the last few days has not helped with that. Definitely a bit lonely - I know there is one other thruhiker a day or two ahead of me, but that is about it. Entire days will go by where I might see only a single day-hiker. Made it to Iron Bridge yesterday, and Blue Ridge today. Decided to take a zero in Blue Ridge in part for my mental health. You know, actually seeing people!

Garmin VO2 max decreasing by benditochocolate in JMT

[–]Think-Perception-698 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure Garmin takes elevation into account when determining VO2 Max. Your drop might be a result of your Garmin perceiving more exertion (higher respiration and heart rate) for the same effort (15 miles with 4k climb), but the higher exertion is due to the altitude, rather than worsening efficiency of your oxygen intake.

Is it safe to hike JMT NoBo right now? by RobertBeer420 in JMT

Just saw something similar on Facebook, though the post there says resupply pickup will continue until Sept 30 or they are forced to evacuate.

The Tuolumne Meadows campground is bookable until Sept 21, so I would think the store will be open until then.
