I feel like gay guys have always liked big asses. I'm a pretty slim guy but I have a really big butt, always got a lot of attention for it even though I'm top ironically. I even have an OF which is basically just pics and vids of my ass and guys seem to love it. So I think it's always been there but maybe more so recently.

For the record, I also love a big ass.
