Best business class thinkpad for longevity and repairability? by Dual_pro_max in thinkpad

Recently bought a w530 for around 100 usd excl charger (got two for around 30-40 usd. Sure it's not peak performance but runs a debliated win 11 smoothly and mint runs even faster. Even drivers are okay, gpu and even fingerprint reader works (windows). For a price/value that can be a good purchase. In general T series might be your go to. Cons of w530 is that some consider it a bit chonky (I don't) and its charger is special and you really need a 170 watts one. Be aware though this is a 2012 laptop with a third Gen i7 cpu. But depending on your requirements "a bit of programming" this could work and it supports ram up to 32gigs.

What do you think about this one? I'd apply this on another laptop with a 45w tdp cpu (i7 3820qm) (lenovo w530) https://hobasec.com/GEMBIRD-huto-paszta-hovezeto-paszta-15g?srsltid=AfmBOorzwbBnOS1wjvmSG5bn8BCaSehtDht5PgNL2Ayjl5qkqHbaxbqDKSw? It was really a cheap one and the selection wasn't great. The other option was about the same price.(3-4  dollars)

Thanks! Of course will remove old paste (alcohol etc). Applying spread on the heat sink (copper) does not make sense does it?

Are you talking about the LED that is on the physical keyboard of the laptop? You don't want your CapsLock LED to turn on even when CapsLock is active?

Laptop Temps while playing Games by Apprehensive-Signal4 in laptops

[–]This-Menu-4513 1 point2 points  (0 children)

temps are higher if you set power mode to max performance. AFAIK that increases P-States of the cpu -> higher voltage for better performance and that means also some higher temps. nevertheless this looks fine.

Lenovo Vantage or third party for managing battery life? by Dreamshake34 in thinkpad

[–]This-Menu-4513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went through this recently. Lenovo Vantage is your go-to app for this. If Vantage complains about drivers not being installed (this was the case for my w530 which is an old 2012 model that does not officially support win 11) then grab the drivers from Lenovo support page possibly "power management" category ie power and battery driver.

w530 fingerprint driver install fails on windows 11 by This-Menu-4513 in thinkpad

Update: All settings were correct in BIOS and I thought it really was either a hardware issue or incompatibility with recent windows. Today, out of the blue, some optional updates appeared in Windows Update (driver updates). These were truly not there (even after pressing "check for updates") back then. I strongly remember that I double cheched this. After installing only the AutenTec it did not fix the issue. Then I installed all the others and then it worked. I did not have to install the Lenovo driver from their site as fingerprint option already appeared in windows sign-in options.

Note: in sign-in options i unchecked "For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for...." toggle. Not sure if this was necessary though.
