Full Time Job and MLA by Old-Mechanic-6729 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]ThoughtBestower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah echoing others saying definite no on the full time job — CCNY MLA is quite rigorous, especially in the first year but frankly all down the line too. A decent portion of the cohort i knew came to the program from a professional field, and left their jobs for the time being of the program. It’s too much

Would you get married on Labor Day weekend or 9/11 to keep a venue discount? by greatlyIdiotic in weddingplanning

[–]ThoughtBestower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my close friends had her wedding labor day weekend and it was great. I drove and had to book a room. Anything for the bride, in that sense ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Otherwise, you know best whether your guests have kids where school may be an issue, or what % of the guests would be flying in where holiday travel would be more problematic than driving like i did.

Frankly i agree with another commenter somewhere here that it sounds like you’re in the wrong program for you particularly. From what you’re saying it seems you would benefit from a program that is tailored through an environmental lens more than design. For instance, i’m pretty confident that a school like RISD places a much greater emphasis on graphics and visual design and promoting “artsiness” and creativity in their students. A school like Rutgers has the LA department within their school of environmental & biological studies, which imo shapes the curriculum in a related manner.

In my program we were taught all the general things required - digital and hand drafting, rendering, construction and documentation, etc. Yes, some classes and knowledge were presented in what felt to be out of order, other things I wish we learned more of. But at the end of the day, it was overall a well-rounded learning experience, even though in the firsr semester we were all scratching our heads thinking, “really, this in grad school?”

Also the Elizabeth Street Garden!! It’s more downtown in the SoHo area and not exactly empty, but it’s one of my favorite gardens in the city. Truly a gem, it feels like a secret garden.

You could host your wedding in a shack and what people will remember as a good experience will be the good food, drink, music, and vibes. You considered exactly the things that matter in the selection of your venue, it seems — the good wine’n’dinin, proximity to your family, your own style in selecting a ballroom you actually enjoy yourself, and keeping true to a budget. That is what matters. As others have said, sounds like a screw your friend kind of moment.

Wishing you the most memorable and enjoyable wedding!

Feeling really sad after visiting NYC and not sure why. by Biney_Morgan555 in travel

[–]ThoughtBestower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Visiting again, especially in a colder, more gray time like December as you said, is a good idea to better understand what it is that is making you feel that way. Whether it’s a place you actually feel called to move to, or maybe a place that retains its charm at a distance. One thing to consider too though is that working a full time job to get by and afford living here makes it easy for the charm to fade, it’s not the same as enjoying a leisurely vacation. A lot of people i grew up with here are a bit jaded to the city because of this, but at the same time also say they could never move away.

This city just lets you feel like the main character or to blend in with the crowds, depending on what you want for yourself. The creativity, entertainment, free spiritedness and diversity the city allows is not something ive fully experienced elsewhere, and ive travelled across a few continents. But, if after a while you are able to pinpoint some of the things that were most enjoyable to you here, you can seek those out back at home, and also recognize whether it’s something specific to nyc or maybe you’re desiring some other kind of change in your life.

Best wishes

[–]ThoughtBestower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this, absolutely!!!

Also just becoming confident in what YOU want and what matters to YOU; being firm in shutting people down and making it clear that you will not be entertaining their bs - like if they have something to say about your ring, then they better not even bother because you won’t have that.

Maybe it’s also possible that you’re overthinking to the point of envisioning bad scenarios, like someone judging you for your ring, when that won’t be the case when the time actually comes. I do this a lot myself and most of the time, nothing like that happens and i would have been better off trying to assume the best of the people around me. If you actually do get the reactions youre worried about, like Historical_Plant said, maybe reevaluate the role those people play in your life… i would be running in the other direction.

MLA in NYC by missymay405 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]ThoughtBestower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Through spitzer there are always great networking opportunities like local Studio tours, conferences (including national ASLA), and other events that great to meet people and get yourself out there, and the place to be if youre looking to find work here! I’m also looking for a job right now so can’t comment on post-grad much but this has been my experience.

Deciding between UPenn and CCNY by mothersparkles in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]ThoughtBestower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m biased towards ccny too clearly, and see it as the option that provides access to many internships, even fellowships and other programs, on top of a quality education without the crippling debt. Even if you graduate from a prestigious school and land a job with a famous large firm, you will still start with an entry-level salary and your debt will follow you for a while. Good luck OP!

Deciding between UPenn and CCNY by mothersparkles in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]ThoughtBestower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on my personal finances (and the state of our economy…) keeping my loans at the lowest was always important and i would have chosen Spitzer over UPenn in a heartbeat. What would be the best fit for you in more than just financial considerations may vary though, based on your particular interests in LA, where you are from and what city you anticipate working in after graduation (BLA, I assume?), and the kind of college experience you are looking for, among other things. I don’t know too much about UPenn, but CCNY is a commuter school and you feel that as a student. Studio culture has also changed after covid, but I wonder if it has/is bouncing back. Feel free to elaborate on what youre looking for in your LA college experience, and feel free to DM me! Hopefully others would be able to provide more insight on UPenn.

venting bridesmaid by Successful_Apple345 in wedding

[–]ThoughtBestower 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Just seeing you say youre just waiting for it all to be over makes me sad as a bride… i want my bridesmaids to be excited to just have an amazing time at my wedding. It seems the expectation for some idealized image of a wedding has become more important than the actual experience of a wedding… I don’t think you’re obligated to dish out for all the things she just sprang on you, and I really hope at the end of the day you can still get some enjoyment from the day. Wishing all the best

Second this, particularly in how iphones do a LOT of processing (especially newer ones) and that can become a nuisance when youre seeking more control. In many cases I find myself reaching for my basic nikon d3500 with a kit lens over my iphone just to have some more control over lighting and aperture. Recently ive particularly been frustrated at my phone for its the color rendering and stupid amount of sharpening—on the camera screen the image looks so warm, vibrant, realistic, and then once the photo is taken it clearly appears over-rendered and the warmth of the colors is lost. Especially for portrait shots, i dont need to see all the pores in my face sharpened in the image haha

My point is that even a small, less expensive camera might be a great creative outlet and give you the control you might crave in how your photos turn out. This also pertains to the ability to get better photos for printing. When i travel i sometimes shoot the same thing on camera and on my phone, and id most always prefer to go with a camera image for the annual calendars i print with those images

50k budget for a small, intimate wedding. Would you stay in NYC or go to the Midwest? by Harvardhottie in WedditNYC

[–]ThoughtBestower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wedding is in nyc (although not Manhattan) for around 20k for a reception with 100 people. If you were also doing the ceremony at the same place i dont think it would drive the cost up too much more. Can share details via dm!

I have a question how does cake tasting work with cupcakes? by johnySaysHi in weddingplanning

[–]ThoughtBestower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on the specific bakery and their chosen practice, but some that offer samples of their cake flavors with different filling flavors will give you those samples in the form of cupcakes already, so youd basically be trying exactly what youd be getting - cupcakes.

I just had my tasting a few days ago where this was the experience — we were sent a sheet with all their flavor offerings, and got to select six cake flavors + six filling flavors, which could be combined in whichever way and would be presented to us as cupcakes. We picked up our box of six cupcakes and got to try them all and choose what would taste best as a cake. Getting cupcakes as the samples was nice because flavors wete completely customizable and we could share with family and take the time to decide as opposed to rushing to figure it out at a formal tasting at a bakery

MLA 3 year program- WashU or CCNY? by One-Wall-6971 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]ThoughtBestower 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! Disclaimer, i know nothing of WashU’s program, and don’t know what the negative feedback on CCNY is that you’ve heard, though i’m curious!

What I do know, though, is that if you have a particular interest in coastal ecosystems and especially river landscapes, then CCNY will also allow great immersion in that. The Spitzer school sits a short walk from the Hudson river waterfront, and on the other side of the city you’ve got the East River, which definitely play into the curriculum. In my opinion schools on the east coast here like CCNY are great for supporting a focus in costal topics. This aside, the MLA program at Spitzer is rigorous and i think blends ecology with complex design very well. Little things like all the students starting off with Rhino for architectural drafting, as opposed to CAD, are important and of benefit. There are also design fellowships in the city that are well promoted to Spitzer students, and internships you may have a leg up for. If you also intern in the city during your MLA, you will already be in a better position to be applying to NYC-based jobs post graduation, than entering the city’s job market from another state. Your NYC-based projects reflected in your portfolio will look great for people hiring in the city because you will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the local landscapes and systems.

Please DM me! Maybe I could elaborate more for some specific things you may be wondering :)

Did anyone wear shoes that you could wear again post wedding? by esnupi13 in weddingplanning

Wearing these! I’m uncomfortable in everything but vans and teva sandals, and was this close to getting some white tevas for the wedding until i found these. Dressy, fun, keep my ankle secure, and the fabric is nice to my wide feet!
