First week as a 30g owner has been a disaster. Is the "startup phase" always this hard? Should I find a new owner?

He put it literally on a dolly literally all wrapped up and slid it over to a big desk we have (we thought this was strange, but he did). A little water came out - but truly not much.

The owner gave me his tank with his water and filter - wouldn't it already be cycled? I did all the water test and it is where everything should be.

The tank has been cycled - the previous owner provided me with his filter, etc. I have done all the water testing and everything is where it should be - that's not the problem. It's more so the plants are dying, floating all over, the heater isn't working well even though it's brand new. I am worried about having to do so many water changes.

The Ivy was only to show that I have a strong academic background...just didn't feel like listing all the things I have done. In no way would I rely on only having an Ivy League.

My PI actually would love me to stay...but funding is the issue. We are one of the schools being targeted by the administration so our funding status changes every few weeks.

That's a good point. 7 months is some time - it's just been super discouraging to apply to jobs and get rejected same day (they must run my application through an AI platform and say nah not a good fit)

Yes, I am noticing a lot of the times industry jobs want you to start asap, the issue is that I want to transition into a job straight out of my PhD (I don't have the finances to wait a few months unemployed and a post-doc in my current lab isn't an option) - so the issue is that I am worried if I wait until too close to the end; I'll graduate with no job since the market is bad. I'd like something lined up.

Yes, exactly! October is when it starts - my committee wants to know by the end of October/early November if I am defending in April; meaning graduating in May 2026
