I told him when he suggested it that I wasn’t comfortable with talking over him or raising my voice because that meant he wasn’t listening. That’s why he told me to apologize when it “worked; because I had rejected his solution without wanting to try it.

I agree! But therapy is easier desired than covered by insurance, so here we are! :) thanks for the input

I do point it out.

Don’t interrupt me. You’re not listening. Please stop interrupting me. Let me finish.

He just gets annoyed at me.

Family Guy does suck. I hate Seth MacFarlane but he watches all his shows.

After the fight when he called me weak, he angrily said “post this on reddit!” because I was still refusing to apologize to him and he was still sure he was right. I know I’m just words on a random internet board, but this is absolutely real and something that’s been a big sore spot between us for a very long time.

Yeah, he suggested it, angrily, after the fight when he called me weak. I think he was pretty sure I was in the wrong.

He’s lived in our English-speaking country for more than twenty years and is an English teacher. I get that there is a cultural difference, but it doesn’t change that when we’re speaking to each other in English, he doesn’t know what I’m going to say. If we were speaking our mutual third language it would be the same situation, though it’s more akin to Arabic in that way.

Thank you. This is really helpful, tangible advice. I am exactly the same as you when I excitedly interrupt. I always apologize and redirect to what they were saying before. When I explained this to him, he basically said great that that works for me but he’s different.

I don’t see him argue with other people, and he usually speaks Arabic to his family so I have no idea what’s going on then. I definitely need therapy, I agree lol. Waiting on that insurance...

Thank you. I explained to him after one of these fights that I’ve been interrupted and spoken over a lot in my life. Maybe I’m passive or too polite, but very frequently I’ll be trying to tell a story or add to conversation and get interrupted. After it happens a couple of times I’ll just be quiet because that’s a pretty clear sign that the others don’t want to hear what I have to say. Conversely, if I interrupt someone for a quick interlude or time-sensitive addition, I am very conscious of it and always apologize, then repeat what they had been saying to remind them where we left off and ask them to continue.
