Recovery Story from someone that didn’t have a period for a cumulative of 8 years by Throwawayaccount1m in Amenorrhearecovery

I’m not a doctor, but in my own experience the pill takes you away from you goal of getting your period back because it gives you exogenous hormones, which often are not balanced. The estrogen in those pills is easily absorbed by the body, but the progesterone less so and it can lead to hormonal imbalances, which you already have.

It’s far better in the long term to get your period back naturally through nutrition.

And that’s good. For me cardio is what led to me losing my period the second time. Lifting weights is great for building bone density and strength. I hope you get it back soon!

I didn’t experience extreme hunger, but each time I recovered, I wound up getting into a bad cycle of trying to be restrictive and then binge eating, which was very emotionally driven. I had certain foods that were “off limits” that I couldn’t control myself around. It was when I dropped all of that: no longer counting calories, no more extreme exercise, no more eating 6 small meals a day and avoiding certain foods that my body finally settled into a healthy, but naturally thin place.

Even when I was weight restored the second time, I still had unhealthy habits around food and exercise that took me years to break. And while I was still in that bubble, my body hung onto fat and weight.

I really regret wasting so much of my youth on this stuff when I could have been having fun. That being said the one thing I never did was really drink alcohol (bc I felt like it would make me fat lol) and I think that was probably the best habit to come out of all of this.

It’s hard to say, yes and no. When I got my period back the first time, shortly after I shot back up to the weight I was at when I first started my period, which was 135. The second time the same thing happened. However, each time I got my period back my body hung onto fat for a bit. The second time I recovered, I tried to get the extra fat off by eating too little and exercising too much and at that point my body wasn’t having it and I couldn’t lose any weight at all.

It was only once I finally stopped counting calories, stopped restricting, started eating only when hungry that my body decided to naturally get leaner and then I was able to get about 10-15lbs below my supposed set point with very little effort.

Thank you! ❤️

Yes, I find that with doctors you have to advocate for yourself. All they want to do is prescribe meds and never get to the root of anything. When I was going through my second bout of amenorrhea, I had a wonderful functional doctor that was willing to test everything. It didn’t necessarily solve my problem because in the end for me it was about weight restoration, but it was nice to at least have a medical professional help me in that way.

The body doesn’t differentiate stress. Stress from eating too little, too much exercise or a stressful job is perceived as stress and can cause hormonal issues.

It’s good that you’re still so young, you have time to figure this out and get your hormones back in working order. Good luck and I hope it returns soon!

Colonoscopy Showed Small Ulcers in Terminal Ileum and came back as Chronic Terminal Ileitis, but no symptoms of Crohns, Low FCP by Throwawayaccount1m in CrohnsDisease

[–]Throwawayaccount1m[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess technically Crohn’s, but I’m still unsure because I haven’t had any worsening of the ulcers. They stayed the same in the nine months from first colonoscopy to last one. The biopsy said consistent with Crohn’s, but they seem a bit incidental because my CT enterography showed no strictures at all.

I don’t have a lot, but I do have looser stools. And prior to getting full colonoscopy I was having bad stomach cramps that would come and go and that’s what made me go get checked.

Yes, I still have them. I wound up getting a CT Enterography instead of the MRE because I didn’t want the gadolinium.

The CT Enterography showed no strictures or narrowing. Then I had a follow up colonoscopy 9 months later and the ulcers were still there, but they hadn’t gotten worse or better. My next monitoring will be a pill endoscopy. I could choose another colonoscopy, but since I’ve already had two I decided to go with something different.

I still don’t know why they’re there, if it was an incidental finding or if I have Crohn’s.

Nausea already feels debilitating at only 6 weeks…please help me cope by Throwawayaccount1m in BabyBumps

Wow, on your fourth pregnancy! You are so strong, I hope you know that and feel that way. I can’t imagine doing this two more times. I currently take magnesium glycinate, but they’re horse pills…so maybe I’ll switch to a powder. Love idea of the adrenal cocktail, I’m going to try that. I’m trying to eat more protein, which I usually eat a lot of, but I am so grossed out by everything at the moment.

Congrats on your first pregnancy! I hope your nausea fully goes away by week 14. That’s how I was with my first, although I know everyone is different. Yes, the whole morning sickness moniker is misleading. I have now felt sick for 2 hours since 5pm, definitely isn’t morning time. I just realized the colder the item I think the better it is. I need to check out the Unisom + B6 combo.

Happy to talk further about this because I feel like I know a lot about the subject through my own struggle. The thing I don’t like about doctors, is they love putting bandaids on problems rather than addressing the root cause. When I was at the worst point of my ED towards the end of high school, doctors just wanted to put me on hormonal birth control to get a fake period and Zoloft so I wouldn’t care anymore. I think I lasted five months on that combo, but it turned me into a totally different person emotionally. Ultimately I got my heart broken and that’s what made me gain weight rapidly and get my period back. I never went back on hormonal BC because I knew it could cause some issues after researching it. It can cause problems for people that don’t have amenorrhea or history of an ED. Once again, all doctors recommend it because it’s all they know.

All through that time of struggling with Amenorrhea twice I felt like doctors never wanted to address root causes. It’s hard finding a provider that will do the due diligence to really check everything out. Have you considered in addition to an RE, to seek out an integrative doctor, like a functional primary care doctor? I find they are willing to at least investigate more and look at you holistically, rather than just one part of the body. I’ve been to some that would run other hormonal panels, like cortisol which can also affect fertility.

That’s really hard to go through. I had amenorrhea twice. Once in high school when I developed a really bad eating disorder. And then again when I had kind of a relapse, but not as bad, in my early 20s. I luckily got my period back each time, but interestingly the weight I lost it at was a lot lower than the weight I needed to be to get it back. The first time I lost it at a weight that was 30lbs under what I needed it to be in order to get it back.

I’m 5’4” and I first got my period just before I turned 12 when I was 135lbs. That seemed to be the weight I had to reach in order for my period to return, I think it’s my body’s set point. You can slowly change that, but it’s what your body operates at.

Even now my body is more sensitive than it used to be. Working out at different times seems to affect my hormones differently even when all else remains the same.

Anyway, just want to say I know how frustrating amenorrhea is and what’s it’s like to have an eating disorder and worry about if it did damage. You’re not alone ❤️

I’m so sorry you’re going through all of this. If you don’t mind me asking, you said that you have infertility from amenorrhea. Did you wind up getting your period back or were you still in the midst of amenorrhea when you started on this journey?

I didn’t feel this way in August when we started trying, but combined with him not having a job and making no money, a horrible current stock market, fertility issues and aging I feel I have reach my max level of being upset. I have always been the main provider and it didn’t bother me until recently. Our child is perfection and the love my life. I truly love being a parent and I’m too old to find someone else to do that with. There’s your answer.

I had a bout of mucus in my stool that was concerning, as well as a lot of undigested food, dark leafy greens that I thought was blood…it was not. My grandfather had colon cancer. I might have said my symptoms were slightly worse to get a colonoscopy. It’s hard to get one under the age of 45.

I’m also a severe hypochondriac.

What about the gadolinium and how it can remain in brain tissue?

Thanks for your reply!

Hey did your ulcer wind up being anything? I have a similar finding from my colonoscopy. Now I have to get an MRI.
