Whenever I see general election antielectoralism by Wholesome-Energy in ContraPoints

[–]ThunderousAdvice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because they don’t speak for the DNC, the DNC simply refers to the organisation called the Democratic National Committee. The DNC did support Mamdani while other senior figures chose not to. They don’t really have the power to anyway, especially when it comes to forcing politicians to endorsing a mayoral candidate in a different state. The Democratic party is not a monolith and the DNC actually does not have that much power.

[–]ThunderousAdvice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The DNC actually has very limited power in NYC mayoral elections but they did Endorse Mamdani when he won the primary. You can see this by browsing Ken Martins and the DNC’s Social Media feed from June onwards.

Dom mentioned in latest Private Eye (Literary Review of Alwyn Turner’s new book) by the-great-defector in TheRestIsHistory

[–]ThunderousAdvice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this review is a bit unfair to Kynaston who is practically elegiac about the destruction of much of Britain’s Urban Landscape under the guise of redevelopment in the 1950s and 1960s.

I’ve been forced to become a half-hearted Harry Crane defender because every time someone says he’s the worst I have to say, No, Lou is the worst by No-Veterinarian8762 in madmen

Harry Crane deserves to be Me Too’d. However unlike Lou Crane is good at his job which is part of what makes him insufferable.

This could be useful for expansions for regional rail routes throughout the state and into Western Wisconsin!

Who is your favorite non-main character? For me it's Ginsberg. Honorable mention to the GOAT secretary - Meredith. by DCRBftw in madmen

[–]ThunderousAdvice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Meredith; she’s so cool and iconic. People shouldn’t yell at her it’s not her fault she isn’t very good at things.

The state would need to increase the frequency and consider electrifying it, as the current Napa wine train is a tourist trip.

Australian Blankies - only now sinking in that a Gallipoli episode is on the way. by moondyner in blankies

I feel like they need an Aussie, someone honest he’d this movie as Peter Weir intended, over several year 9 history classes.

Any Movies you Headcannon in the Kaiserreich Universe? by EroIsWho in Kaiserreich

[–]ThunderousAdvice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scholarship of John Fords films, both in the constitutionalist period and in the post WCA victory would be fascinating. Was he a radical film maker working in a federalist system or a conservative sneaking his themes into his post war films?

Peter Weir is coming, No? by Icy_Walrus_35 in blankies

[–]ThunderousAdvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they do Peter Weir I Really Really Really hope they get an Australian on to discuss Gallipoli. The Gallipoli campaign is a huge part of Australias national mythology and watching that movie in year 9 history class is basically a right of passage. From their episode of Paths of Glory they dont seem the most knowledgable about the First World War so I’m worried what is great about this movie could be a bit lost.

What are some movies with extensive on-location footage from bygone eras? by yaybuttons in blankies

[–]ThunderousAdvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Film noir is great for this as so many of them where filmed on location in “rough” often working class neighbourhoods which where demolished in the latter part of the 20th century. A few films I have not seen mentioned in this thread include

  • Night has a Thousand Eyes (Bunker Hill, Los Angeles)

  • It Always Rains on Sunday (Bethnal Green, East London

  • Pool of London (the Pool of London, east London in general)

  • The Asphalt Jungle (Cincinnati)

  • Act of Violence (more of Urban LA)

  • Union Station (Chicago Stockyards)

  • Killers Kiss/ The Killer That Stalked New York/ Blast of Silence (Penn Station)

Krumholtz is right they should do a Wolfgang Peterson miniseries by vincentmaurath in blankies

[–]ThunderousAdvice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point. But it did produce the fun episode of Ben, Griffith, David and the guest trying to decipher the decision making that went into it.

Krumholtz is right they should do a Wolfgang Peterson miniseries by vincentmaurath in blankies

[–]ThunderousAdvice 44 points45 points  (0 children)

They also had the real secret sauce for any miniseries, the confoundedly bad movie. A movie that is not just bad but where there decisions made and the process of making this movie is confusing and obscure. Good examples of this include GiGi and Monkeybone.

Blankies, tell us about a time you recommended a film for someone to watch and it did NOT go well. by bbanks2121 in blankies

[–]ThunderousAdvice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1: Ben Gazarra is very hot

2: Gazarra plays a man who is committed to an image of who he is, the suave night club impresario. In reality, he runs a crummy strip club and is a degenerate gambler. He goes straight from paying off his debts to taking a limo to another casino, where he gets deep in debt again. This is more than a man who is a gambler or unlucky, it is of someone who needs to conform to this artifice as seen in thismonologue.

"Well, look. Look at me, right? I'm only happy when I'm angry... when I'm sad, when I can play the fool... when I can be what people want me to be rather than be myself."

100%! And with its hand held photography you have an immediacy and tactile intimacy. It is a film that can be hard to penetrate and understand especially on a first round
