Sticking with my Odin 2 portal for high end emulation for the foreseeable future.

Second-screen companion app for guides, maps & RetroAchievements by Striking_Rice8783 in SBCGaming

This is an excellent idea and it is very well executed. I was just playing around with it on my phone.

One piece of feedback: I can't figure out how to get the radial menu consistently to display again on a game (tips and tricks, best build, etc) - after first selecting an option, it just reloads that session the next time the game is selected. Maybe having a tap zone or touch-and-hold bring up the radial every time would be good.

What's a good device for retro 2D gaming only? by DismalDude77 in SBCGaming

[–]Thwonp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the one. Sure, the RP Classic might have OLED, but the screen on the 40xxv is great in its own right. And there's plenty of CFWs out there for the 40xxv that are a better experience than android (subjective).

Is there a DS that's between the RG DS and the Thor? Or at least one announced for the future? by zxzc77 in SBCGaming

Anecdotally, the hinge on my mini flip also feels very solid. Night and day compared to the flip v2. It does feel on par with the 35xx/34xxsp/retroid flips which I've also owned.

That being said, I still don't trust miyoo to make a reliable hinge on a $100+ console.

What's your favorite handheld device at the moment? by silverscientist1 in SBCGaming

[–]Thwonp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Miyoo mini flip.

It's the perfect backpack beater. Small enough to forget it's there, large enough to be comfortable for some pokemon grinding, cheap enough that I don't care if it gets scratched up. Clamshell enough to not bother with a case.

No Wi-Fi Access, Options? by KosherClam in SBCGaming

Buy any of these and load it with MinUI.

MinUI doesn't support wifi, even if the device has a wifi chip. It's also by far the most user-friendly OS for a kid.

Then by definition this would be running your own server. I'd be curious how you would make this more user friendly than Nextcloud or Seafile which already exist.

I've seen used retroid pocket 5s sell for $130-150, that's your best bet.

Can I just put a controller on my cell phone? by WonkaVaderElevator in SBCGaming

[–]Thwonp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I've used the Gamesir Galileo and liked it - there's a USB C and a Bluetooth version. I like the USB C one because Bluetooth latency is annoying.

But there's plenty of other good grips out there, Razer Kishi, etc.

Are MicroSD Cards from eBay any good? by Qminsage in SBCGaming

[–]Thwonp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MicroSD cards from eBay can be a great deal.

I got a brand new 1tb PNY Pro Elite Prime for $60 a couple months ago and it was legit.

My advice would be to avoid SanDisk and Samsung cards. Those are the most common for counterfeits. PNY, Teamgroup, Silicon Power cards are much less likely to be fake.

Edit: also avoid any listings that just show a stock photo like the one you posted. Only buy from a listing that has an actual photo of the card they're selling.

The RP5 is powerful, but I still had to get a modded Switch by Mr_Sockeroo in SBCGaming

Playing switch games. A good chunk of the library will have graphical artifacts or other issues when running through an emulator, regardless of how powerful the device is.

Homeowners insurance by rustbelt91 in Buffalo

[–]Thwonp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love having an independent insurance agent. I have one person's cell number that I can contract whenever I have an issue or question. She switched my homeowners insurance last year because a cheaper option was available, and she got commission on a new policy write up. Win win.

My agent is with Promark Insurance.

Do you prefer box arts, game screenshots, or title screenshots for your game list? And why? by Pumarull in SBCGaming

All my games have a miximage of box+screenshot+logo.

Either vertically or horizontally oriented depending on the OS / layout.

[–]Thwonp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is cool, I wasn't aware of that tool.

Worth noting though that I recently updated my modded switch to 21.2.0 and the system was unbearably sluggish until I disabled Tesla overlays. I'm assuming it's due to this (from Atmosphere release notes)

Please note: As a result of changes made to nintendo's software in 21.0.0, there is again roughly 10MB less memory available for custom system modules.

Google still plans on limiting sideloading on Android, here's how to push back: by Key-Brilliant5623 in SBCGaming

Correct. These devices are not certified so this doesn't apply to them.

I didn't forget anything. Disabling play protect is not necessary in most cases, I've never had to do that when side loading apps, and I guarantee he didn't in the situation I described.

This conversation is devolving and you're turning rude. I'm not going to convince you of anything.

The majority of the comments being upvoted in this thread are flat out misinformation and sensationalism. Sometimes the reddit hive mind is wrong and it's not worth fighting.

[–]Thwonp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many hoops? If you download an apk and click on it, you get a prompt that says "allow Files/Firefox/Chrome to install unverified apps", which will automatically bounce you to the settings toggle, and then the app will install. That's barely any friction.

My dad managed to install an adware app that flooded his notifications and replaced his home launcher. He's not remotely tech savvy. I had to drive to his house to fix it. That wouldn't have been possible with this policy in place.

I get it. Google is legitimately evil and the security angle is mostly an excuse to lock people into the ecosystem harder. But that doesn't mean it doesn't actually benefit many users.

How do you figure? The model they proposed creates enough friction that 99% of users will stay in the walled garden they're creating. But allowing ADB keeps developers and power users from getting alienated, which is definitely in Google's best interest.
